That's true. You don't get it at all. If you're going to compare this to music, then at least make a proper analogy. Expecting the Rolling Stones to be playing in your living room is just silly. If you however go to a concert to hear the Rolling Stones play live, and instead they're using playback, then you have a reason to be disappointed. This is still not a good enough comparison, but it's better than yours.

It might sound awesome inside the M135i and the other cars with the same feature, but it's just pathetic. It's like stuffing your underwear to make your junk seem bigger. Even if it's the same shape as the original, it isn't real.

Listening to a recording does not make it fake. Playing the recording in an environment with the suggestion that it is live (and not enhanced or pre-recorded) is what makes it artificial. It is like when Milli Vanilli was caught lip syncing.

sorry but your analogy still doesn't work. :-)

The rolling stones are playing at the concert but what you are hearing in the cheap seats in the back section is an amplified sampled version of what they are playing. which is exactly what the m135 and m5 do.

absolute nonsense. what you are hearing is simply and amplified version of the real thing. miilli vanilli would be like listening to a cd of a ferrari in your m135i!

Hmmmmm...

IMHO, I personally think that it sounds better without the sound symposer. I like the N55 sound, and hearing it every day I prefer it to the "Manufactured" sound in the M135i. If you really want the engine sound, open the windows, find a tunnel and leet it rip.

That is where this active sound technology could potentially lead, playing different types of engine sounds in your car. There have been similar suggestions for playing engine sounds like this in hybrid and electric cars because they are too quiet. The fact that the real sound is being amplified over the stereo system does make it artificial, because you would otherwise not hear it in the cabin with the windows up if the active sound were disabled. Perhaps "artificial" is the wrong word to use. "Over compensating" may be a better term of what the active sound is doing.

Really wish that BMW saved the development investment in this fabricated/amplified sound and passed the savings on to us. They could have given the car just a bit less insulation to accomplish the same and passed on even more savings. I like technology and the benefits that it can bring. Applying this technology and associated cost however seems like a waste. I'm glad I didn't pay for this in my 135is (or did I?).

Do we really want our "cars" 50 years from now to sound like the cars of today? Why does nobody miss the sound of 56k dialup connecting? I get both sides of this, but I think the consistent back and forth about normally doesn't go anywhere.

If you like it, cool. If not, let's bring it up to those who listen at BMW and see what other solutions there are. Pouting and saying "i'm not buying BMW" isn't going to stop them, or any other manufacturers from going this route.

Personally, I think it's kinda lame, but I would prefer the "fake" sound to decreased efficiency. I hope that these machines sound like gundams or spaceships and the sound of an engine will become something of a vintage treat.

Sad to see electronic engine sound generation in any car. I could see trickery in a hybrid or electric car....but a BMW

Long live the M3 V8!!!

The Fiat 500 Abarth is also one of the best sounding cars on sale today. Seriously, go drive one, you won't believe how angry that little turbo four sounds.

In that video test vs a Subaru, the tester commented on how great the car sounded.

So I guess what I am asking is.... who cares??

I 100% agree. This is yet another sign of the changing attitude of BMW. They continue to move away from the enthusiast and towards the general public.

I for one will never own a car that needs speakers to hear the engine properly, as long as I have a choice. And this is yet another reason why I'm done with the BMW brand once I sell my car (if I ever do).

People who like to think themselves as purists or "true" enthusiasts?

The M5 owners at M5POST seem plenty happy with their cars even though they all now their cars have this.

Don't know what's more lame: the actual fake engine noises or the fact that BMW said nothing about it, hoping they wouldn't be called out in initial reviews.

Wasn't there a clip the other day from AutoExpress, where the reviewer exclaimed "and that engine sounds fantastic...lovely noise on the upshift". funny
