I would imagine however that it was something else. My hunch is that it happened out at sea. Maybe rough seas in combination with an inexperienced crew?

Sad though. I feel for those with cars on board. At least you have alcohol!
Rofl - but you could mistake it was the unloading crew who went a little crazy. But after deep thinking You get a hunch....

NO - sorry for this post - couldent leave it...... i am bad!

Wow, I think I just dodged the bullet on this one

I was told on Tuesday evening they had found a car with the specs I wanted but it had just come into port and was allocated to another dealer, so they had to get it transferred. Yesterday (friday) it was still processing at port. Sounds like I just missed it by a few days, unless they tend to sit on the boats for a few days and processing is actually code for being repaired

I always thought that they had a way to chain the axles down like in a car carrier or some other way to keep cars from sliding into each other when(not if) the boat lists.

I didn't think the weather was particularly bad in the New York area for the last 36 hours or so.

my question is:
- Can someone from SC go to the port (CHARLESTONE) and take some pics of the cars that are going to get offloaded there?

Oh Shit!

This is at least the third incident that I am aware of with groups of vehicles damaged in shipment.

Too bad for the M3's. That just reduced the total production vehicles available for 2008.

Exactly, there are a lot of parts that could be salvaged. I'll take me some M3 rims.

I wonder this is considered "light damage". I wouldn't pay $60k+ for this car.
BMW's definition of light damage...

It is BMW policy that any transportation damage that is repaired at the VPC is disclosed to the dealer. The dealer will get a damage disclosure report for any vehicle that has repairs done at the port, regardless of the value of the repairs.

Any vehicle with damage that would cost 3% or more of the MSRP will not be sold as a new car. Depending on the damage, it will be repaired if it makes sense to do so, and then it will later be sold as a "used" car. Typically, they keep these cars for a period of time and use them as demos for company executives, press fleets, training purposes, etc. and then sell them at auction to BMW dealers and other dealers for resale as a used car.

So on a car with a retail value of $60k, if the damage costs $1800 or more it will not be sold as a new car. From looking at these pics, it does not look like any of these would be sold as new. The really bad ones will be totaled and BMW will settle with the insurance company for WW. The ones that are not as bad will likely be repaired. The ones that will eventually end up on dealer lots will not be anywhere near as bad as the ones in the pics-- they'll probably have minor damage like scratches or might need new bumper covers; any structural damage or panel replacement and they'll easily exceed the 3% threshold.
