Variable Sport Steering replaced the older Active Steering system.
Read about this in a thread started by ovekvam related to differences between the different modes of driving available (i.e: eco pro, comfort, sport...) |

The way I understand it, the F20/F21 comes with 3 types of steering:
1) The regular type, which I have. Very consistent and simple. 2) The adaptive type, that has variable power assist depending on drive modes. 3) The progressive type, that is slower around center, and quicker towards the ends. I have not seen the type with extra gears and motors on the one series. |

Are you sure there is a steering for the F20/F21 that can change the steering ratio depending on speed? I think not, but I am very willing to be proven wrong.

" Optionally a new variable-ratio steering system can be specified. Variable Sports Steering provides different steering gear ratios depending on the angle of the steering wheel, so that the new BMW 3-Series responds either more directly or more softly to the driver's inputs. This reduces the number of steering wheel rotations required for bigger turns by up to 25 per cent and makes for easier, more convenient parking and turning since less effort is required from the driver " |

The ratio is not variable with speed, but with how much you turn the steering wheel. Compared to the regular rack, it is less direct around center, but quicker when you really turn it over. So in my opinion, less useful for track driving, but nice for parking.
The E36 M3 3.0 also had a very progressive steering rack like that. |
