This was the first thing that popped into my head....

How is this "New" news????

BMW has already been doing this for months...

BMW is now categorizing higher-performance vehicles from the other vehicles available within the same model line.

This is why BMW has been slowly removing the option of things like an M Sport package on base models...they're simply restructuring their product portfolio.

Thank you BMW management

Soon I will be driving my M220 diesel to go to the supermarket, my M scooter to work and drink M Alpina red wines lying in my sofa

Seriously what a loose

So "M" is now a spectrum with full fledged models. It's all just nomenclature and branding. The "true" Ms will still be something special.

I guess I don't understand what everyone is up in arms.

Totally agree, though from my perspective it's more about making $$. To some extent, BMW set the M brand as the pinnacle of performance. Now that they're saying M can apply to models that aren't about the same performance (and I'm talking about total performance, not just straight-line acceleration), this could bite them in the ass.

My guess is that a lot of people were convinced to buy the more expensive M versions because they believed they would be set apart from the non-M owners. If this is no longer true...then a lot of people just lost their reasoning for buying the highest performance (i.e. most expensive) trim.

Granted, not everyone buys an M car for the appearance/vanity, but my hunch is that a lot of them do.

BMW can slap a "M" on whatever cars they want, but to me a real "M" is the one that undergoes M division engineering, R&D, and development.

Any car that has the regular BMW development but with an added power kit or sport suspension is and always will be ///Marketing.

Actually the real definition should be whether you're allowed to partake in BMWs M Track days or not: I got an invite to an upcoming event and my buddy in an M340i didn't. He specially called the host dealership and asked if he could take part in it, and the GM said nope, only for real M cars. They won't let him attend this summer in his brand new M340i, but I get to go with my 2 year old last gen M3 :

Someone should tell you the R&D for M Performance cars also happen in Garching!

The whole thing just happened to beat AMG sale numbers, that's all!

M performance is high performance street car, real M is a track car (. Depending your definition of track) that can be used on the street.
Whoever drives M550 vs m5, or m2 vs m240 know what I'm talking about.
I disagree there, but I see where you're coming from. I've owned 5 M-cars: 2 M3s, an M5, an M4 and an X5M.

First off, if an X5M is a "real" M car, it is definitely not built for the track. Can it do impressive things on a track? Yes, but those accomplishments will ALWAYS be conditioned by the phrase "for an SAV". It's not a pure track car. For anyone.

And...last November I went to Barber Motorsports for a Porsche driving clinic (my 3rd opportunity to do this). I can honestly say that when a Porsche is on a track, it looks and feels like it belongs there. I can't say that for any of my M cars. They always felt like amazingly capable compromises...but compromises nonetheless.

Yes, they do amazing things. But I've never looked at (or driven) an M car and thought "this car truly belongs on a track".

Many will disagree, which is the beauty of forums like this. But that's my opinion.
This is true, an an argument I always made when I owned my E92 M3 with a sunroof, which is how I ordered it.

If you want a true track-oriented car, why are you buying one with a back seat? Let alone all the other creature comforts. Meanwhile it's a crime if I get a sunroof as oppose to the carbon roof, for 40 pounds? Please.
Haha, my first M3 and my M4 were both convertibles, so I completely get where you're coming from.

Some people on this forum will argue that at least three of my 5 M cars really shouldn't count, which is hilarious.

I certainly hope that a person driving an M340i does not tell others it's an 'M' car - it's not.

The nameplate on my M3 doesn't say made by BMW, instead states GmBH M or something akin to acknowledging made by the M division and not the regular factory.

People if you want an M car, buy one with true pedigree - M and then a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - even a M850 is questionable

All M performance cars and M packages etc. are engineered and develop in Garching.

How is this news? also, how does this affect us / me?
I have a m850i, I know it's not an m8 competition. calling it the same name, won't change either the m8 or the base m850i.

That has nothing to do with the differences between the two.

Difference between a dedicated chassis in the 911 and a BMW sedan chassis on steroids. Both are impressive but for different reasons.

I've been out of BMW ///M land and in Pcar land for the pst few years and I'll say that a similar thing is happening to Porsche. It's not about car names or badges, it's that they just don't make em as special as they used to.

Nah, I don't at least, but the m340i is a great daily driver car. My M6 is a beast, just like my others.

Its sad but true. I'm sticking with the e92 m3 because BMW M seems to have lost its way somewhere in the transition to F80. I wish I could upgrade but with M meaning little in the newer cars, it doesn't seem to be worth it. the M2 comp seems to come the closest but not for me for other reasons.
