True for new. My Ford F150 is 6 years old and the Toyota 4Runner would be of similar age. If I needed real off road capability I might just buy a used Jeep Wrangle or Landcruiser. My F150 4x4 was bought for hauling a trailer cross county to Tennessee. It’s still rather pristine because it’s kept in our garage and never been driven on serious off road adventure.

I know a few people that can easily afford to drive a BMW or Mercedes for heavy off road capability but personally I hate to see an expensive vehicle trashed like the used Jeeps, LandCruisers, or 4Runners I’ve seen over the years. For occasional trips to the sweet corn stand it would sure garner admiration.

Unfortunately, the Rugged has still not been approved. There is a strong desire from the Management to bring the vehicle to market, but the hope was that a large proportion of the parts could be carried over from the X5. Following the evaluation, it has now become clear that around 60% of the parts could be taken from the X5 platform. As a result, the project is becoming quite expensive. The remaining parts would need to be completely newly developed and produced. The team is now trying to find a way to implement the project within the available budget.

As for the vehicle itself, it is still not yet clear whether it will be the size of the X5 or more like the X7.
