This car will fail miserably unless it’s priced to compete with the Defender. If they price it like a G wagon, they’ll rot on the lots.

If it looks like that render in the OP or the XM, pass.
Let's see something sensibly interesting please.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I think Land Rover has the correct strategy. The Defender covers the $60K to $160K market, with the majority selling in the $75K-$100K.

Just make sure it has decent articulation and can fit something like 285/75R18 (35") tires and it is good to go.

Maybe it’ll be priced so a loaded out BMW is around the price of a entry level G-Class. That’s where the XM is priced already. To me a question is will this off roader be priced higher than the flagship M product.

There is nothing rugged about unibody construction. XM would get torn up fast off road.
Sounds like most of the folks in this forum have only known asphalt and concrete.

If you want SUV with real off-road capability buy a Land Rover Defender with BMW sourced 4.4 twin turbo V8 and new Land Rover 6D suspension system.

Not sure think it’s pretty new. Hydraulically linked suspension points and apparently is excellent at controlling pitch and roll during cornering, acceleration and breaking. I think more for on road antics. Standard on the new Octa.

I need two vehicles: an M and something for the everything else, including off road. For me, over the last 10 years, that’s meant M3/4 + Land Rover Discovery (LR4 and D5). I’ve been debating what to do next. The Octa would be amazing. Land Rover off road capability plus BMW twin turbo V8. Its crazy expensive though. Until the resale plummets and I can buy one used it’s out of the picture.
I’ve always sort of hoped BMW would dream up something off road capable that could match the Rovers I’ve had (4wd, center locking diff, rear locking diff, deep wading capability). No doubt it will be expensive and out of budget for me too, out could be a cool future option.

They are likely onto something
I live in Park City, UT, and there is no shortage of nice cars, particularly SUVs, which makes sense because we do have real winters there. In addition, everyone is active, so space for gear, towing, etc. actually gets used.
Over the past two years, there has been an explosion of people driving Defenders, probably more than Land Rovers. A club that I belong to had a number of makes come for a demo day, and I drove a Defender. I think it was the 110 with the V-6. They are not cheap; the one I drove was about $90k and was typically equipped for the market. As a long time X5 driver, I was curious to see how it drove. The X5, with snow tires is generally ok, but when it dumps, I do slide a bit and have to be careful of how deep snow is to drive through before the plow comes. With higher ground clearance and more aggressive tires, I would consider the Defender as a replacement at some point. But, even with the purported improvements in Land Rover quality, I would still be wary. The Defender drives ok, but at the end of the day, it's a truck with very standard electronics, features and interiors. I've always thought that X5s were pretty fair value for the money, even my X5M Comp. If BMW could build a SUV that is better for gnarlier conditions, had the usual quality/fit/finish and was fairly priced, they'd sell a ton of them. I would be interested. And, if the current regime is still in place, having made in South Carolina could save a few bucks. Do we have to wait until 2029? |

Being the old guard on this forum, I believe it might be great if you really want to drive your luxury bimmer or Mercedes off road. Personally if we’re doing forest roads we’ll use our F150 4x4 or maybe buy a used Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota 4runner. That way the inevitable rock or branch damage doesn’t matter, because it didn’t cost like a BMW or a GLC. I literally cringe at the thought of rock or branch damage to my X3. I guess if I were considerable richer and didn’t mind scratches or bumps on my $125k or more 4x4 I’d be a buyer of this BMW. I does look pretty cool.
No offense intended but the absolute last thing BMW should put out is a minivan. I could probably get behind a class B van motorhome….that might be really interesting.
