Can the external oil cooler be installed by itself on an 116i, is there a place for it in the oil filter assembly ? Or does the whole assembly have to be replaced with the 118i version ?

yes it does regardless the line. the N20 IC is by far better choice since it has the same volume as the N55 one you after. the difference between the 2 is the N20 internal structure is narrowed U shaped whilst the N55 is broad V shape making it with less surface area. Gains include a slight drop in temperature and thats it. If you after significant contribution to power, response and temperature efficiency you looking to something way more expensive
