Back in nineties post Soviet time I was driving Toyota Carina to our family country side house. I was doing that a couple of times a week, so I new all the speed traps and on the top of that it was customary to flash high beams to warn the ongoing traffic. So I saw flashes when I was approaching the trap and my speed was already below limit. Yet they stopped me. The conversation was typical, check the papers, ask what speed I was driving. Then telling me I was over the limit by 50% and waiting for the cash to get out of fine. The unspoken rule was cash to the police in the amount of 50% of the official fine. No radars capable of providing picture at that time, so no proof. I refused, told them that it was not my speed, that I see them there daily, ongoing flashing, basically telling them I am not that stupid to fall for that. They played good/bad cop also. I told them to write the official protocol and warned them that I will put our conversation on it in a great detail and will file a formal complaint. Well, while we were disputing, hundreds of potential victims were passing their trap and their hands were tied with me. They were losing money after all... So I did not get the ticket. For the reference, the traffic stop bribes back there were at $7B in the early 2000's.
And a different experience: same country, night time on empty 4 lane road, about a mile to my home, got stopped for speeding when was at 110km/h in 60km/h zone. Admitted guilt, officer asked where I was going and I pointed to the house. He just said to be careful and let me go. Last edited by antgenn; 09-07-2025 at 11:33 AM.. |

Mother was a nurse before she retired and picked me up from school going home (long long time ago).
She was doing 45 or something in a 40 and she got pulled over. The cop saw my mother was wearing a nurse uniform because she was working that day and asked her 'mam, it appears you work at XYZ hospital or care centre, can you give me the name?' She replies 'XYZ..' The cop let her go..We were confused expecting a ticket Next day her colleague asked 'Hey, I hear you got pulled over yesterday speeding?' Turns out the cop was her co-workers husband Last edited by wizardofOz; 09-13-2025 at 12:52 AM.. |
