New issues on the roof headlining were reported in China and Taiwan, brown stain observed on the headlining.
Initial report suggests it is due to fabric material issue, not related to sun root leaking or rusty. I doubt if it is the root cause. |

I posted this in the wrong section, I will keep you posted about this! :
hello everybody! Following all the problems I read on this topic, I decided to check my seats for the rust, and guess what... My new F20 aged from 02/2012 (construction date) with only 11.000km DOES HAVE damn rust everywhere under both seats (driver and passenger). I went to my concession, they noticed it, we planned appointment on 12 Novembre 2012 for replacement of my two sports seats!!!! |

Well,
As a brand new 116i owner,i was aware of this rust problem on down side of the seats while i was ordering my car to the dealer.. Because in my opinion in case of a major problem, seats can easily be changed or repaired etc.. But when i heard about brown spots on roof i am very annoyed about this situation This is really un acceptable and rust on the body of car should effect on strenght&safety.. I hope that this would not come real

Just read this on another BMW Forum: "I've been told by the dealer that BMW will officially release a fix i.e. modified parts to dealers by the end of November. That said, they have offered to replace the parts now with new ones that they will coat themselves. Whilst I'm quite impatient I think waiting for the official fix will probably be better than going for the short term solution." I hope that's true.

Update:
My dealer called me yesterday and told me they already have the "solution" to solve this problem. They said this took around 4 days, so maybe next tuesday my car will be on service and I'll drive a service replacement car. I'll keep you posted! PS: I told them that I want to fix the brake noise too! |

I got this rust on seat base-issue on my F20 and after a very heated discussion with my BMW dealer in Sweden said that they dont have a solution yet. That I should contact them again in 1-2 months and they will sort it out then.
How can this be true if people from other countries got their rust issue sorted? This F20 was my third BMW-car but now my loyalty to BMW and trust in my dealers competence is almost completely gone. Mostly because they tried to convince me to ignore the rust (!!!) and that they are not responsible since interior rust is not covered....insane way to treat a returning customer that found an obvious factory fault! Anyone else from Sweden that got this issue that can report how their dealer responded? Last edited by Ozolz; 11-13-2012 at 02:51 PM.. |

I have the same problem with my 118i Sportline. I live in Taiwan.
Not only the seat plate...Some rust spots on the welding of the dashboard frame are already visible... The local dealer has just sprayed a layer of black paint on my seat plate... Some other F20 owners in Taiwan also have same problem... We've been told by the dealer that they will find a final solution by the end of November... So...Just wait and see..... |

I've reported it and they said they'll have a look at it next time the car is in. We'll see what they do at that point.

For the record: mine (F21, produced 09/12, sport seats) is not too bad, but has rust on both seats too. Dealer wasn't aware of the issue yet, will contact BMW.

I got mine 3 days ago, build was end of october/begin novembre and i see no rust.
But the metal aint fully shiny though, it looks like there was some sort of liquid on it and it dried up leaving some of those "dried up water drop markings" you see sometimes around. it has the color white/grey if that makes sense. |

I got mine since late May, and both front seats are very rusty, a simple coat will not fix this.
And about the BACK seat? Any info?

And you are wrong about galvanizing. Check the whole process of making e46, including galvanization (approx 7th minute):

Just wanted to say - bmw do galvanizing. If you have rust on your new car - this is manufaturer's fault, not material supplier's. Vid as an example.

Seat producer
Seats are coming from seat producer, who's buying parts and making assebly. I know fox example, that seats for vw sk and skoda cz are produced by johnson controls, but the seat frame is done by company brose, who's buing galvanized steel from somewhere...
Anyhow, we should keep claiming at bmw and bmw should fix it in supplier chain. |
