From the Pistonheads road test written by Harris
"Take the base three-door for £25,845, keep the cloth, the brilliant £525 Dynaudio hi-fi system and the dampers and leave it at that. Not once did I find myself exiting a second gear turn and wishing the car had a locking differential over the ESP-based cheat it offers as standard - maybe on a track I might, but who actually uses a new GTI as a regular track tool?"

But how do you manage to bore your chums shitless down at the pub if you can't explain how the electronic system collates data from pitch and yaw sensors, runs a comparison with the throttle output and vectors the appropriate torque to the relevant front wheel, maximising grip on every single corner all the way to Tesco? I dont even have to lift the throttle on the Plumpton Roundabout!

Things could be different for the 116i or on track though. As for the old GTI vs. 125i debate.. Well, maybe the 7 with the fancy diff completely changes the game, but I've owned and loved a 5 (and driven the 6) but after living with 125i for a couple of months I cannot imagine myself ever going "back" to a GTI. The GTI was great right from the start until the very end but the 125i somehow just seems to get better each day... it's just much more interesting to drive.

What makes you think the GTI Performance will be faster? As far as I can see the specs are only marginally better and, maybe the MK7 changes everything, but the 125i absolutely kills a MKV or MK6 in the corners and on the brakes.

surprised that noone is reacting on the launch of the M Performance Power Kit. I would consider it once I get used to the power, not sure though if it will be available in my country. How should I interpret 'with FSC': a newer 125i has the PPK already ready in the ECU, while the pre-march 125i needs a new ECU and is therefore 100 euro's more expensive?
We only need a mechanical diff and than the 125i M Performance might match the new GTI... |

I thought you had detuned cars in Belgium just like here in Norway for tax reasons. If we increase the power in a rather new car here, we have to pay a lot of extra tax. Very expensive power.

I've been interested in this kit since I placed my order for the 125i.
I'm dissappointed they still keep it below 328i levels, but I do think the 40 Nm increase is noticable enough for that price.

fine...debate has actually turned indeed why the 125i isn't a 128i in the first place.
A 128i would have been sufficient to keep the Golf on some distance. I know I repeat myself, but I still don't understand, bringing a 128i instead of the 125i would have costed BMW 0 point 0 extra. But they still deemed they should suck out some of the spark of the car, just to screw you as a 125i owner and leaving the win to the Golf or leaving sufficient ground for the M135i? I soooo hate these bad product management decisions! Now they try to sell you guys an upgrade to slam more money out of your pocket, while it costs them extra money to do the downgrade and later the upgrade. While doing it right from the production line is for free!!!!! I so massively hate this eletronic down tuning especially when BMW is doing this! |

Than I don't see evidence that the transmission line in the Golf is lagging, the practicalities are better, the build quality isn't inferior either, the traction is surprisingly quoted in nearly every test as a BIG winner to all other FWD's!? I see rather all tests state: it's again the new king of the hot hatches. A 125i is a hot hatch to my opinion, so it's reigned by the Golf?? Don't get me wrong, I positively believe that the RWD and 50/50 weight distribution are key for a hot car, but my faith is really challenged with the Golf performance now. "Now let's talk about the BMW M135i. I didn't have one to drive back-to-back with the Golf, but it does pose some very awkward questions for the VW. For starters, I think it makes the case for a fully-loaded £35K Golf with performance pack, leather and all the toys look very tenuous indeed. The Golf is a beautifully executed everyday package, but the BMW's performance is on another planet. So I think the Golf is actually at its best lower down the price range because it needs to be nowhere near that pesky 1 Series." And this is also worrying... He's testing a none Performance Golf and uses an M135i as benchmark, and once again, no single ref towards the 125i which is the obvious sibling to compare with! |

However, I wouldn't be surprised if they come with a 128i when the LCI comes around. Together with an N20 330i if the 328i proves reliable enough.

But if your top priority is driving pleasure I don't think the Golf comes close. I wonder if it matters though. In the end, I think the majority of people will buy an F20 just for the badge.

When I look at the owners around me, I guess the badge is still the ultimate decisive factor and the 50/50 and RWD stuff we are so keen of, is added to the list of "negativs" by most!? Probably less for the 125i and M135i community, but ALL my colleagues that have a 5 or 3-series at work, are constantly tempted to jump into an Audi because the Audi grips! |

They claim 171 kW in the engine, and 43 kW lost in the driveline, leaving 128 kW at the wheels. That is a 25 percent loss. I find that hard to believe. With that power at the wheel, I think there is a lot less in the engine than 171 kW.
As a reference, our stock 116i had 104 kW at the rear hubs. |
