From some angles this new design looks horrid, and yes it is ugly. I've owned a 135i for over three years and was looking forwards to BMW getting their act together on this, but its an opportunity sadly missed I feel. And if id just bought a VO 1M i would be FUMING.
Recently I saw the new merc C class coupe and I thought "mmmmmm nice". For me a car needs to appeal to the emotions, and for this reason I wont be buying a new 1 series. Perhaps BMW will go back to the drawing board but I doubt it. Someone said "they know what they are doing....." but if owners are going to turn away then surely its just wrong. |

WTF.
The 1 series has gone from "scared cat" to "angry hamster."

EEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! WTF I jts threw up man... This may be the ugliest BMW EVER!!!! Seriously it is uglier than the pontiac aztec. I guess VW/AUDI are gonna rape BMW over the next few years. I bet their designers are going yessssss while laughing at the morons who drew up this disaster. the interior is awesome though.

This is terrible. Shark or not, it's all about how cohesive the design is.
Z4 / E89 - yes, shark like - elegant and aggressive, clear winner. 1 / F20 - shark like - disproportionate and distorted, clear loser.

To be completely honest, now that I've seen a comparison with the current model, and how low its new front profile is, I don't find it as terrible as I tought the design was initially. I kinda find it more agressive. Must take Scott26's word and wait to see it in the flesh. It may be better looking than the current car.

I think the worst news in this thread is for the folks who bought a "limited production, limited color" E82 VO 1M...only to see that this color will now be rocked on a 116d...
I think the interior looks much better than my current 135's...I have looked at the pictures of the exterior many times now, and think I will try and reserve judgment until I see it in person...oh wait, it isn't coming here... I am hoping for something...less wrong...when the coupe is officially shown...

You can see that when the M division took to it they realised they needed to break up that wall of plastic between the grille and the headlights.
The have driven three(!) deep creases through that area to break it up. Definitely an improvement but is also an admission of guilt by BMW in a way. Sigh. |

The F22 coupe and F23 cabrio models based off of the F20 will be forthcoming and replace the current E82 coupe and E88 cabrio, which come in 128i and 135i models you're asking about specifically. So short answer is no, the F20 hatchback is not replacing the 128i/135i coupe or cabrio. But the upcoming coupe (F22) and cabrio (F23) variants based on the F20 will be the replacements.

I like it, it's the only RWD hatch out there, will feature arguably the best engines in it's segment and if an N54/55 version is in the wings like I am lead to believe, this thing will blow the competition away.
Much better looking than the E87, and we have only seen the base models. Remember, the 118i will do 0-60 almost as quick as a GTi with DSG...

I don't think its that terrible, but its definitely a let down in the styling dept. I'd rather spend the money on the Golf R. Watch it sell a million in the first week.

The "angry eyes" and turned up nose kind of remind me of this:
I wasn't too fond of the original 1 series either, although I thought it looked better in person (and I wound up buying an E82). The hatch probably isn't coming to the states but I wonder when the coupe/convertible will be released?
