I'm all for BMW's remaining rwd, and wonder about the push BMW has made into this market, especially considering that MINI seems to play in the same field. However, I'd gladly sell my M Coupe for a 123d five door hatch, just in case BMW USA is listening. |

I sure hope BMW doesn't go FWD on the new 1.

Until the 1 Series is based on the 3 Series it will remain RWD. Anyway it makes no sense. If the BMW 1 Series is FWD, why then should I get it over Audi A3, VW Golf, Seat Leon, Opel Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Megane, Peugeot 308, Citroën C4?

Ohh but that day has come. The F3X 3er is based on the F2X 1er. It's the opposite of what the E8X is

The next generation 1er (F20). Is based on the new platform matrix which will also share with the next generation 3er (F30).
The platform is modular and the reason why BMW invested heavily in this new modular structure because of the flexibility and cost effectiveness of working with more concepts for the 1er and 3er. Both segments which over the next decade will see more growth as customers downsize. This is very much BMW's highest priority at the moment along with Project-i because it has proved to a development point of view that it will be very profitable for BMW. The excellence regarding this platform sharing is that the modular construction allows for front and rear drive and of course all wheel drive. It can be stretched , shortened use either front, rear or mid mounted engine. Variants can be conceived by moving firewalls , wheel wells etc. The Front wheel drive small BMW will be part of the 1er portfolio it is known as "one-zero-one" 1001 which could actually become the name for the car but is smaller than the 1er with a different more individual design. I especially love how the headlights and rear lights are pushed right into the corners of the body. It actually looks great with a sleek roofline and short overhangs and typical wheel at each corner, at least it does not look as dumpy as the Audi A1. The car has been termed 1001 because the 1er is a successor of the 2002. BMW would like to prove that the BMW brand can achieve what MINI has done with Front Wheel Drive but with a more distinct BMW flavour. |

1) I like that car
2) It should never get a BMW badge (Let Mini have that car, it would fit well into the lineup) 3) I want to see more turbo, because they have more tuning potential. 4) I still want an inline 6 (with turbos) Just my take, Regards, Mike |

This is the first time I've heard of this car. I'm guessing theres a reason why they haven't brought it to the U.S.

As a current 1 series owner:
The new version will add a couple extra inches here and there, which will make the car a nice size, and the boxiness will really add to the overall impression of interior roominess. However, I will not buy a FWD BMW! I will not buy a 4 cylinder BMW, no matter how many turbos or HP (unless it were clean diesel with some good torque #s.) I would rather have an electric BMW instead. At least it would have 100% torque at 1RPM. Cheers! |

hahaha. You know we're talking about the 1 series "hatchback" right? It's not sold in the US.

As for the comment about not buying a 4 cylinder BMW, that's almost as strange as a car enthusiast with an M3 not knowing about the 1er hatch. BMW has so much history with four cylinders, including the original E30 M3 that even their headquarters has four towers to represent the "horrible" four cylinder. Quick, Americans, get out and see the world, there's a lot out there. |

Outside the US. Every best selling BMW model in each model range is a Diesel, apart from the Z4 but that is about to be rectified soon for Europe.
That is how much the landscape has changed over the past two decades. |

I really don't dig those front and rear lights. The front look like an Integra and the rear... if they keep that style with the coupe it's going to be one ugly car. At first sight it looks cheaper than the current 1 series.

Just as a bonus, the orange tape on the mirror is not a turn signal. BMW has done this on the last few test mules. |

BMW got some serious Problems with some "Fourbanger´s" ... Many 116 and 118i got Problems with the "Steuerkette" (sorry i dont know the Word in English), its the opposite to that Part (Belt) that need replaced at 30 thousend Miles (VW/Audi etc. Engines). I hope you understand what i mean .But that downsizing Engines are the Future... and i think its not the badest Way... at least it´s an BMW I think when GM was smart enough, they had to sell the Opel Cars much much earlier in the US... There are enough Car Tests here in Germany that clearly says "an European V6 or R6 got a better MPG than allmoust every 4 Cylinder Engine that comming out of the States" The Problem is, wheve got higher Fuel Prices here... The Manufacturer had to build Cars with a good/better MPG, otherwise nobody will buy Cars here For Example. One Liter Super is here right now 1.45€. That means 1 Gallone = 7,058 USD . How much is 1 Gallone right now in the US? Greetz Marco
