Can't wait to see real pictures at the Paris show. Sure it's a BMW but if they could use a FWD and make it fun to drive like the MINI but with added comfort, I wouldn't mind. I've just come to accept that BMW is big and they're going to try new things.

So this is a small Toyota Venza, then? kidding. It could be much worse. I don't hate looking at it. My guess is that the production interior will be more like the f30's modern line interior, and will be "optionally" in the color shown, with black or darker colors being the norm. I will definitely test drive one when I'm ready to buy my next car. For fun. And then buy an m3.

I think it looks great! Why do people care if it's FWD anyways? Not every BMW needs to be a 'performance' car. It's a hybrid commuter and from the looks of it, seems a lot cooler than the Prius or Insight. If these type of cars can help finance future ///M car development, the I say, Good Job BMW!

This thing does not look anything like BMW proportion-wise.
The front overhang is waaaaay to long and the wheelbase is too short. When you look at it from the side, it seems like they had put a giant bulge of steel on two tiny wheels. Stop that FWD thing, BMW, please! |

Nice looking hatch, not a pretty as the new Volvo V40 but far more attractive than the Mercedes B class.

Although it looks pretty cool with the space-ship theme going on, I feel mostly sad about it anyway.
I still think bmw should not be in this segment of cars... leave it to others, bmw doing fine anyway. |

I do not see anything bad in BMW's attempt to create a FWD compact car.
For example, besides the creating sporty and comfortable cars Alpina has another business - wine production. It is not bad if BMW follows similar way - creating sporty cars they will have another business in the mass segment of compact cars. But... in fact I don't like the design of this compact BMW. Volvo V40 is better- its design is much sportier, the interior is much nicer. |

BMW will make FWD cars whether we like it or not. It will hurt the integrity of the brand, since BMW has been doing some quite aggressive marketing against FWD in the past. They also used to say that naturally aspirated engines were superior to turbo, but they had to eat their own words. The problem is that many of the enthusiastic customers still keep BMWs old values. Losing enthusiasts will probably not affect the bottom line much, but it will change the brand. It will be more like Ford, VW and Toyota, and less of a dream car without the support of the enthusiasts that worship the brand and preaches its superiority to the masses.

Most guys from this forum only judge from a point of view of US market. But this kind of verhicle will sell very good in Europe. This is not a car intended for the US market, but perfect for Europe. I would buy one in an instant, perfect for the wife and driving the kids around.

Not liking it at all. It looks very similar to the Opel minivan and B Class mentioned elsewhere and it is a FWD BMW.
Not that it matters though. This line of BMW I think isn't meant to appeal to the traditional BMW customer, but the type of customer that wants an econobox with a BMW badge on it. In that sense, it should sell well. The only thing I'm hoping for is that this model's main reason for existence is to make money and keep BMW independent, and not as a dipping a toe into the "will people really care if we go more FWD?" water. Most people probably don't care about FWD, RWD, AWD, straight 6 or V6, weight distribution and all the rest of it. But please, please, PLEASE BMW, those of us who do care about those things know that things like RWD, the inline 6 engines, the sweet sound of the exhausts, the driving dynamics etc. are what usually make BMWs so great. Do not forget about us. Pretty please. |

The whole reason BMW went this route is bc people didn't even know/care that they were building the E8X 1 Series as RWD. More than 80% thought it was FWD. Those same people bitched that the interior was too small, and there were packaging issues compared to the competition.
This is the fastest growing segment as people opt for smaller premium cars than larger ones. Europe is a financial mess, the US is still recovery and this makes sense on so many levels. BMW can make a small FWD sporty- it has been for a decade with the MINI and last time I checked no one said the MINI wasn't sporty or fun- yet it remains FWD. RWD is better for race tracks and true performance cars but BMWs are light years from that now, and even then. They had great driving cars with marketing and that is no different here. I'd take this any day as a fun. premium car for day to day commutes- compare this to every other hatch out there and it is easily already the best looking and most driver oriented from a non performance perspective. Sign me up for one of these hybrids, with fuel hitting $9 a gallon here in Europe this is BMW's first hybrid that makes any sense from a fuel savings standpoint.
