I was very keen on this mod, but I kinda gone limp on the idea after reading about people who've experienced that the struts have suddenly come off and damaged their tail lights...

Hello guys.
Installed mine yesterday but unfortunaltly the boot does not open completely! It pops out apprx. 30cm but stays opened half way.. I used the correct green springs but without the roofing washers. Only metal rings. But I dont think it has to do with missing the rubber washings. Any help or experiences someone? |

Hi all, An update
I finally got the springs and bits and pieces to do the lifters It was a very easy process to remove the struts, do the work and refit. About 10 mins a side. I followed the proceedures as in the videos and instructions posted. I used a piece of timber with foam padding to support the boot lid whilst I removed the struts. (Each side) Once removed, I unscrewed the head, slid a 8mm hole 20mm x 2mm H/D synthetic rubber washer down the shaft, then fitted the new 25mm spring (left it green to show it here) followed by a 8mm hole 20mm x 3mm H/D synthetic rubber and the metal washer (4mm drilled out to 6mm), refitted the head and refitted to the car. The boot lid now opens automatically when the boot release button is pushed on the remote. 'Fantastic' Thanks to all for their advice and helpful hints provided Last edited by AusF20/F48; 01-14-2013 at 06:15 AM.. |

I read with interest that AusF20 uses 25mm springs, others say that the boot opens half way with this length and 32mm opens it fully but is a fair bit harder to shut.
Is this the same for all that have fitted the springs or does it vary? And has anyone caused any damage to their car? |

I think it depends a lot on the gas pressure in the strut
The standard strut is about 435 Newtons. I could get the same length in a 490 N version for $49.00ea My concern about the length of the spring was the distance between the strut body and head when the strut was compressed. It only gives around 22.5mm. The max compression of the 25mm spring is at 14.5mm + 6mm for all the washers= 20.5mm which is under the 22.5mm, so no real additional stress on the strut. I was concerned that the 32mm spring only compressed to 19.20mm so when you add the washers it could have the potential to generate too much tension on the strut and bracket. My thinking was I rather try thicker rubber washers (as they will also compress) with the 25mm Spring than risk the compression. If needed, I would have got the higher rated struts. An update
This morning the hatch only opened to the point at which the strut pushes it up (about 20cm) I tried a couple of times so I have replaced the lower 2mm rubber washer with the same as the top one. Now both are 3mm It now opens fully every time post note; I found that after a week or so the bottom rubber washer became loose and allowed the spring to slip a bit. I have solved that by replacing the bottom rubber washer with a Neopreen cone washer taken off a high end tap washer ($2.95) As it is cone shaped, the smaller end fits the raised lip of the gas strut body perfectly and the larger end fits the metal washer under the spring. It was just a case of prying the Neopreen cone washer off the tap washer body and drilling it out slightly. Have checked several times a day for the past 5 days and the system works perfectly. I hope this helps anyone else wanting to fit the springs etc Last edited by AusF20/F48; 01-24-2013 at 04:36 PM.. |

Hi all
Just an update on the spring and washers So much for expensive H/Duty washers. After a couple of months, The top flat washers split and tore from the pressure of the spring when the lid is closed I have replace them with the same green tapered tap washer I used on the bottom. The low cost green tapered washers are still perfect. A touch up with flat black spray paint. Problem solved |
