A little Pinto personal history: My father had a 1971.5 Pinto (it had the half-glass hatch instead of the full one)-- it was the first new car he'd ever bought. It had a ton of California smog equipment on it and ran terribly as Ford had pretty much just half-arsed the emissions tech on it. He finally got tired of it running like shite, ripped out the carb, charcoal canister and a few other things, went to the auto parts store, got a basic Weber carb to install and the car ran like a charm from there on out.
He brought it to Japan for five years during an AF tour about a year after he bought it-- it *really* freaked out the Japanese to see a young kid in what they thought was the driver's seat-- and the Pinto was a BIG car as far as the Japanese were concerned. After Japan (in 1982), he got rear-ended in WA on an off-ramp after work and surprisingly, did NOT go up like a buddhist monk. He found a local body guy to fix up the rear end on the cheap and I drove the car for a few years in high school and all through college. His deal was that he'd pay for parts, but not labor-- so I got to learn how to keep it operational if I didn't want to walk everywhere. I learned a lot-- how to use a timing gun, how to time off the block when the timing belt threw a tooth, how to replace the oil pan (which was a *complete* bastard to pull off), how to replace wheel bearings, etc. It was actually a pretty good car for something that only cost a dollar a pound (well, at least after all of the smog stuff died a miserable death). The "fix" for the whole gas tank thing was easy. Ford simply installed a hard plastic shield between the gas tank and the driveshaft. All the shield did was push the driveshaft down in the event of a rear-end collision instead of allowing it to penetrate the tank. With no tank penetration, the problem of immolation was solved. I actually still have the rear trunk logo from that Pinto on the wall of my garage (although the "tail" on the "o" got broken off somewhere along the line). It brings back a lot of memories of working on the car with my dad and learning how to use a wrench. In retrospect, those lessons were *expensive*-- as that's when I got the bug to start working on cars. We're *easily* past $100,000 in mods if I added up all the cars I've worked on over the years. R.

Lady Jane, Mercy Please! As I scrolled down and paused at scene 2, I then was utterly surprised and terrified on exposing scene 3. I just can't unsee scene 3. Thanks for starting my early weekend in terror! Kidding aside, have a great weekend. |
