Honey I've shrunk the 5GT!
There are so many better looking hatch cars in Europe, where this model is aimed, I doubt this will sell well. The outside looks "utility" like cheap "white goods". Looks like a child drew the front! Never has an LCI been needed so urgently. BMW fix the front light asap. If they do the same on the F30 then I'm off elsewhere.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't tell me the front end will be the inspiration for the next 3 series!!!!!!!!!!!! If it is, I pray there's enough time left before production to change it!!
What focus group liked this? Please tell me, I just don't get it. The front end is terrible! |

And for those guys here saying they now missed Bangle, well I don't know, maybe this was some kind of unintended karma?! You want Bangle gone? Fine, but you know what they say, be careful what you wished for because it just might be true... |

anyway, i still think the chosen f20-styling leaves enough room for future improvements (f22, lci, m styling). |

Lately BMW lack vision and guts to use a truly fresh design and instead rely too much on feedback and focus groups to tweak Bangle-based designs, using what many would call "design by committee" which will not work for car design The other approach which BMW used successfully for many years was steady refinement of design - this would be better than design by committee. Thats my two pence worth.

I've given myself a lot of time to deliberate over this one since the photos leaked...but alas, it's not any better.
I do like parts of the interior, not all of it...but that front end is just utterly hideous. The headlights look like they belong on a much larger vehicle, and when combined with the shark-nose kidney grilles, the whole thing just looks like a lump. There's no real definition to the front end, the bottom of the grilles kind of just goes directly into the lower bumper, taking away any semblance of proper lines. At the top, you can tell there's supposed to be some sharpness to the front end, and then it just vanishes. Maybe if they had pulled in the rest of the bumper to give it some sharpness, like the E24 M6, it would work; I mean, they did move the roundel onto the bumper and then cut the hood line straight across, just like the E24 or modern Z4...but it doesn't work. There will be a facelift on this, guaranteed. |

The render was win, here is why: The headlights are 10% sleeker, makes all the difference! The headlights are also set inward with a 2% lip, nice. The front bumper is pronounced like an e46 The grill shape is like the e46 (2002 model year) The actual is fail, here is why: The headlights are 10% more bloated vertically, ruins it The headlights lose the 2% lip The front bumper is rounded and set inward, cant even describe it, bad. The grill shape is a rounded off square, awful.

What everyone mentioning the Polo seems to miss is, the 1er had the single frame rounded square tailight first, BMW had rear LED light bars first, so the POLO copied BMW's design, not the other way around. I said this when the Polo was first shown.
Either way, the car is not half as bad as people are making it out to be. It smoothes out all the strange lines of the E87 (line along the bottom of the doors, headlight droop etc) and adds up to date BMW lighting features - eyebrows, clear lenses and 3D light elements. The wider flowing rear arch is muscular and the pushing nose is aggressive. No way can everyone tell what this car looks like "in real life" because no one has seen it in real life. Just as the 5 series looks "soft" in pictures and gives you an erection in real life. Every time I look at the pictures I like it more & I can see how black, white and silver are going to be the most popular colours, to contrast with the bumper and mirror trim or tone in the matte chrome on the blue model here. If I were forced to mention a possible improvement I'd say a wider kidney grille, and that's it (but I'm sure that will appear on the LCI model) With the right wheel (and later deep M-Sport bumpers & sideskirts) this car will be quite the looker I like it Last edited by v1p3r; 06-04-2011 at 10:25 AM.. |

And I thought the 2012 6 series front had the worst looking front end of the brand...
This car will need a facelift before it comes out. BMW can't be that oblivious to these and other forums that are smashing the exterior design. I personally never saw the point of bringing the hatchback 1er to the US but I could see it selling well in more hipster US markets like California or New York, now I pray that they won't ever bring it. Afraid of what might happen to the 1er coupe's front end...

The car doesn't look that bad guys. With M Sport, it'll be pretty good. The only problem with it are the headlights. The interior is beauty and the back and sides are fine. Just the headlights need some rework. Hopefully the 2er coupe that comes here will have reworked headlights.

oh god.. every new car bmw comes out with, everyone says it looks like shit, and then a little later everyone loves it...
My opinion: The interior is AWESOME. The exterior is great too, but the only thing wrong is the headlights, they are too vertically tall, they need to be squeezed a bit. The headlights just look like they belong on a bigger car/suv.

For some reason, in the red Sport version all the creases on the hood and front bumper get washed out. It's amazing how the blue Urban version looks so much better, it's the same car, same lights, same grill, but you can see the definition and creases which make it look more aggressive. The red color makes it look just to soft and round. I still say, I'm sure it will look better in person.

Attachment 534639I agree a little was lost from the sketch but that is normal. Just wish it didn't loose so much, especially the lower part of the front. The rear lost a little bit also.
But I am holding out to see the other models and the M-Sport, which is what I would have ordered anyway.....if it were available in the US. Maybe by the LCI....? |
