I just had my 2013 116d at the dealer with a few issues. Problems and dealers comments below:
Rattling from engine bay - Timing chain with tensioners and guides must be replaced. Creaking in drivers seat when turning - Seat frame must be replaced. Sounds from cabin fan at higher fan speeds - Cabin fan must be replaced. Only sound from the speakers on one side when using media Iphone docking - Iphone media docking must be replaced. Unconsequent behaviour from automatic wipers - No fault found, wipers reinitiated. Rattling from rear part of exhaust when idling - No fault found, will look closer at it when car is in for restauration after christmas... Two blisters in paint on bootlid - Pictures sent to warranty department. All this after 15 months and 22.000km (14.000miles). So the serviceplan for new BMW`s is the following: service every other year or approximatly 30.000km, light restauration every year or approximatly 20.000km. I am not impressed at all and this might be my last BMW even though it has always been my favourite cars. The worst thing is that I really had to argue with the dealership to get a free rental car..

Hi All
Apologies, I have been out of touch with the forum. I have been OS for some time with work in Africa and missing my fix of forum chats. Before I left, I posted the saga of my BMW see my post LED eyebrow lights All going well today. I do have to praise to the guys at my BMW dealers, they were very helpful and arranged loan cars each time. (135i Coupe, X1, X5, 428i and others) |

My 116i has had some rattles at 2 front doors since last day (~4000 km). When I drove on the rough road, or when I got up/down at the ramp of my house's parking, that means when the car was shaking a little bit. That sounded as exactly as my past Mercedes GLK had a problem. I've never met this problem before 2 days.
anyone has the same problem???

My 2013 116i auto ,has done only 600km but what I noticed past few days is the random engine vibration at times which is almost is like either it's lacking fuel or air. Almost like stalling
Once when I started the car to drive it , for one or two second the car started limping and jumping/jerking then I breaked. And it worked fine after. When I rev the car stationary upto 3000Rpm then release the gas pedal, when the rpm reaches 1500 engine rattles and vibrate a bit. Not sure if it's normal or not? I always keep the fuel tank full with 98 octane fuel. I'm taking it to dealer to tighten the handbrake but has anyone had this engine behaviour ? Last edited by bennzwel; 04-18-2014 at 03:41 AM.. |

Coming from a straight six, I definitely noticed that the four cylinder engine in the 116i vibrates a bit. There can also be some rattle at under 1400 RPM at very high load due to rather soft engine mounts. Other than that, I haven't noticed anything. No limping or jerking.

Took the car for a drive and it worked well. That only happened three times when engine was cold so might have been normal or delayed fuel/air feed. Not sure
What I noticed is sometimes the throttle response is delayed, especially from stand still. But when I change the driving mode and back again, it becomes fast and response . From comfort to Eco then comfort again. Might ask the dealer to check the firmware and see if I have the latest and if all is good. Still enjoying the car and considering the fact it's only done 600ks |

The throttle respons is not delayed according to driving modes, but the pedal mapping is different. You need smaller pedal inputs for the same throttle in Sport mode than Eco Pro.
Since this is a turbo engine, there will always be some lag when you go back on the throttle pedal after coasting, since the turbo needs to spin up and build pressure before the full potential of the engine is available. |

Thanks ovekvam. Good to know than assuming it's an issue. But I found the throttle response different from standstill in the same mode ( comfort ) at different instances, some times it responds immediately after the full stop , other times it a bit delayed . Is this normal ?
And I thought turbo in this engine kicks in after certain rev range . Does it work at any rpm ? |

The turbo is always spinning, but the more exhaust flow there is, the faster it goes. The boost depends more on throttle load than RPM, so if you coast at high RPM, the turbo will slow down. It does however also spin up faster again at high RPM. At idle speed, you can not get full boost even at full throttle. I think you need to get up to around 1300 RPM to achieve that.
The 116i I drive is manual, so it seems to always respond similarly from a standstill. It might be the auto transmission that tries to be intelligent in your case, and adapt to your driving style. |

Thanks for clarifying it for me. You might be right about the auto transmission behaviour with their adaptive nature. I think only the sport mode behaves almost the same at every instance ( with traction control off )

There is a clear tape they (factory) tape on the side of the door, you can ask them for it. That stops the noise for like one year. Now it's back again, so I guess I am going back for more taping...

Not checked fully but the impression I get is that most of the squeaking issues are experienced in countries with hotter and drier climates than most of Europe.

Hi,
New member here with a 2013 118D M sport. Bought from new with M sport braking system. at 12K went in for Offside wheel knock - steering rack replaced. Still knocking iwthin the play of the steering wheel but BMW tell me this is a normal 1 series thing!! Clutch judder intermittantly from around 2k Since being in for the steering rack it has developed what i would describe as a rattle at 1000rpm. You cant feel it but can hear it. Its a dull note sound. I thought it might be clutch related but after some testing by pulling off without throttle input im happy its the throttle. Its going in next week because Its starting to lag on acceleration, any ideas ? It wont be the EGR valve that gets a good blast out on a regular basis!! They didnt tell me on the last visit that they did a software update but I guess they did as now the revs do something odd. If in gear with the brake on they sit at 800rpm but release the brake with clutch engaged and they rise to 1000rpm. There is also a strange note from the exhaust when you switch off. Its like theres a hole in it!! Im getting fed up with this car which is a shame as it handles beautifully. This is my first and last experience of BMW ownership but I still have another 3 years of my finance aggreement.......... ive had 8 cars of varying forms over the last 4 years and I have never suffered the problems I am suffering with this thing ive got now. How easy is it to fight BMW on these things |

car in the stealer at the moment. timing chain being replaced due to rattle front under seat being replaced due to rust. front offside knock , replacing control arm but i suspect the steering rack is the problem, (we will see) vibration on start up . no comment from dealer yet. i managed 153000 out of my e90 320d m47 diesel with no engine problems and sold it to my brother and it is still going strong. i have a dec 12 116d tourer for a courtesy car and it has a knock from the front and the beginnings of a timing chatter and it has done 10000 miles !!! very poor from BMW and they have the nerve to charge you for insurance for the courtesy car!! |

I can report almost 1,5 years of ownership of the 125i, 23.000+ km, and still no issues to talk about. I changed oil and filter myself just before 20.000 km.
Here in Norway we see a issue with the electronic meassuring the washer fluid when it's below -6-7 Cels. It's something to do with the conductivity of the fluid. Add a tiny bit of salt and it's solved, or thange the washer fluid to some other. |
