Gas station mistake caused BMW to get diesel, resulting in $17,000 damage?

Is $17,000 excessive or the usual repair cost? I once pumped diesel into my Lexus by accident and the dealer only charged me $550 to clean out the diesel.(yes, it was my own fault)

I'd imagine that is the cost of a new engine and the labor to replace it. Seems about right depending on the engine.

When I did it myself, the dealer was able to clean the diesel out the Lexus V6 engine. (Including new spark plugs) Does that mean BMW engine and fuel system are more delicate or less resistant to diesel?

My brother-in-law did the opposite - put gas in his diesel truck. He was out of state, and apparently the pump colors were the opposite of what he was used to and he just kind of did it on autopilot.

Very luckily for him he realized it before starting up the truck and was able to get someone to come out and tow him to a shop that took the fuel tank off, emptied it, and cleaned it. Otherwise yeah, new engine.
