F20 Steering Rack Thrust piece STUCK!!!
Hi All,
I recently bought a 2015 125i (n20) and it seems that the previous owner has already replaced the thrust piece. However, I wanted to replace it again because the knocking has returned, but I can't get the actual thrust piece out? I've tried to pull it out as hard as I can with long nose pliers, but it won't budge. Has anyone experienced this? How would I go about fixing this? Cheers guys |

Hi mate. I am stuck in the same situation as you. I have a 2012 F20 118i which was knocking when mostly when turning full right and when during over bumps or rough road surfaces. I replaced the thrust piece from one I bought on ebay. The bottom bit was slightly different but still fits(had to push it a bit because of the orings on the new one) when I installed it, I had to tighten it more to stop the knock which resulted in the steering to stiff, when I loosen it just a tiny bit(few mms)the knock came back. Now I was trying to remove it to put the old genuine one it is fully stuck in there and does not want to come out with plyers.I don’t know what to do now, the knock is still present on some road surfaces which is very annoying.

Update:
Manage to get the stuck thrust piece out after a tough fight.. It is impossible to get it out with the rack on the car! I removed the 2 etorx + 18mm nut on top which hold the rack, steering rack connectors and one etorx which connect to the steering column (make sure to mark before removing). Dropped the rack down a bit and used an angled long nose plyer and a long screw driver to use as leverage. Make sure to use a good quality plyer with grips firm at the tips otherwise it will keep slipping. Good luck! I put the genuine one back and it is much better than the replacement one. |
