Issues that come up after 70000KM

Had my 70000K service today.

Pretty much was a disaster...
So
1. head cover for the valves - leaking oil.
2. Vaccum pump needs replacement - ?did they even check it?
3. Turbo cold air intake cracked - needs replacement.
4. coolant reservoir is cracked aswell but tiny dent on the top not leaking anything - obviously trying to rip me.

anyone had so many issues with a 4 year old car????

Unbelievable
F20 - 118i (2013).

Same here with regard to #3 and #4 issues. Let me add Water pump failure @45K Klm and coil pack failure twice (oem Delphi). Mine is 07/2011 and currently at 68K Klm, stage1+ remapped.[IMG][/IMG] pic showing where the oem CAI cracked... it's right where the metallic clamp is holding it against the turbine

I am at 67000km now

So, the way I read it - it might "only" need a new valve cover gasket and a new intake. Where is the intake cracked? Picture? How is the tired/failing vacuum pump diagnosed?

Mine has been hooked up on meth for the last 30000 and only had a failing/noisy boost solenoid - happy BMW owner here so far

Mine has done 80,000km. Only issue is the air-con is getting a bit smelly.

A piece of paper got into the air-con blower causing a ticking noise, 5 screws later and lying upside down in the car all fixed.

I have talked with a friend of mine who owns a 4 year old 116i F20, but with 120000km (pretty intense)
He had some of the same issues.
at 10000KM turbo intake pipe completely ripped while driving (mine was only cracked partially).
He had oil leaks from the vacuum pump and the head gasket same like me...and other issues with water leak.

I guess in the end it comes down to your driving style, I am pretty cruel with my car, aggressive driving often, sport mode...Etc...I guess in the end thats the reason i bought the car for the first place
Now i am paying for that...eventually it comes down to Turbocharged engine with higher pressures and dissipating heat in the engine bay.
The vent screw on the coolant just broke when i tried to remove it for replacement.

I can confidently say that with a remapped ecu, the changes are %100 that any rubber/plastic component around the engine, turbo and the exhaust will be subjected to amount of heat that exceeds their max design temp limits. Also, the increased pressure would additionally contribute to the deterioration by largening the micro cracks (induced by excess heat) within the rubber.

We pay to play!

We often forget that the harder we work an engine, the faster parts wear and/or deteriorate. More extreme heat cycles will place greater stress on parts, (particularly plastics), the price is reduced longevity.

Even running more revs and heat over a given mileage, can reduce the life of things like water and vacuum pumps.

i have a 05/2013 built f20 118i here in Mexico with almost 100k kilometers

like about 85k kms i started to notice a small antifreeze leak, only when the engine was cold, it didnt happen when the system was under pressure, so i went into real oem trying to figure it out, i came across with the coolant temperature sensor, i inspected it and there was the leak, the oring was bad i myself replaced the whole sensor which was like $ 35 usd at the the dealer, i could have just replaced the bad o-ring but decided to go further, i replaced and cleaned the whole coolant system, put fresh coolant, no problems so far, this also solved a noisy aux electric water pump

at aprox 91k kms a very small knocking noise started like a knocking rod noise which increased and decreased according to rpm (scary) did an anticipated oil change with oil filter, the sound remained the same, i removed the timing chain guide tensioner, it seemed to be in perfect shape(the inside spring was stiff enough) took it to the dealer, had a technician ride with me, he told me that it was probably the spring inside the high pressure fuel pump, but that he wasnt sure and the shop was full with no time to inspect further, but as it wasnt that loud and there wasnt any codes, he told me that it was safe to drive that the worst it could happen was that the spring in hpfp went full bad and the car going into limp mode, passing the 93k kms mark the car went into limp mode, connected the scanner and it showed a misfire in cylinder 2 went bad i played with the position of the coils and the results were replicated wherever i put the coil, it was only one coil bad but decided to replace all the coils with a PEUGEOT/CITROEN oem part (lets remember that our n13b16 motor was designed in collaboration with PSA peugeot-citroen so many parts are the same)psa number part 5970.91 which happens to be the exact same delphi coils at de bmw dealer but half the price and the noise went away

i drive my f20 hard too, but no other major issues, other than replacing the brake pads, discs, clutch at 70k kms

sorry if my english is not that good but as you may have noticed english is my second languange

I have a 2012 118i, now at 62000kms. I had a coolant leak from the back of the engine block, it was a plastic housing which was cracked, had to have the gearbox removed to have access to it. Second issue i faced was coil pack, 1 went out and had to be replaced, a second one is on the way out and will be changed during next service next week. Any one of you had issues with carbon build up?? I am thinking about having my engine checked for carbon deposits and do a preventive maintainance

At around 95,000km the pipe connecting the inter-cooler outlet to the intake manifold blew apart into many different pieces. Got it replaces with an Aluminum one.

I'm really interested in the F20 116i, but reading things like this makes me really unsure.. It's not a performance car. It's a reasonably nippy town car with RWD, it's perfect for the enthusiast that wants a BMW but also wants economy. Why are they so fragile? BMW's used to be made to be driven hard, without having engine components cracking and breaking. What's the use of a quick RWD car if you can't drive it semi-aggressively?

If I'd buy a 116i I'd want to stage tune it, but reading forums and experiences, I think I'll pass because the engine will probably break somehow.

But don't you think BMW intended it to be used as they made it, without stage tuning? When you make a modification, it will usually reduce the built in margins that the manufacturer left in there on purpose. Increasing the power output from 136 to 220 hp is a dramatic change. The older BMWs that could be driven hard, could not be tuned nearly as much.

I have driven the stock 116i on plenty of track days, and there were no issues. The brakes were slightly small for the purpose, but if you get one with M-Sport brakes, you will struggle to fade the brakes for sure.

Mine is 4 years old too (2014), I've changed the flywheel, clutch, brake discs, brake pads and had endless electrical faults.

Bit of a nightmare!

Bmw F20 118i 2012, 117K update:

Issues other than regular services I had to do:

Water expansion replace at 70K -, had a very minor crack which caused minor leak.
Intake pipe replace 90K - minor crack where the metallic clamp with the turbo (common issue).
Considering replacing trunk gas lids asap as they became weak and making squeaky noises on bumps.

Garage List
F21 86K miles

First major issue recently fixed: new steering rack needed due to worn out internal worm gear.

Only other issue was an oil seal on the turbo, a common issue apparently.

A MAF error code flashed up last winter that prompted me to acquire an OBD reader but so far no repetition. Suspect an intake crack of some sort maybe but nothing obvious.

I recently got a recall from BMW Norway about some steering issues... could this be the one?

I had a peugeot 207 RC with that 1.6T and its a terrible engine.
I have no idea if they finally fixed but I would not get another one even for free.
