New Alloy Rims and Winter Tyres - tyre pressure sensor system
Hello,
I share my experience for any one else planning to fit new rims with winter tyres on a 2014 F20 with a tyre pressure sensor system. I did not know that there is a device in the wheel it self, which is read to determine the exact pressure. I have seen they are called TPMS Sensors. My wheels came mounted from the online shop where I bought them, but they do not have the TPMS and so the car does not read the pressure any more. Bit annoying... I will look to buy them, seems they are around 50 dollars per sensor on the interweb or a bit cheaper on aliexpress. Any thoughts or experience on buying these? I guess I will have to wait til I buy new winter tyres again, otherwise it will be expensive retrofitting just these. The pressure gage was saved as preset on my button one |

I tried to do the reset for which you have to drive the car, it tells me there is a failure to get the reading... Now it shows the icon for tyre pressure warning constantly and one beep to highlight an error after the start.
I only had them fitted last night, so will see how long I last before I feel I need to fix it. Last edited by starmir; 10-07-2015 at 02:43 AM.. Reason: spelling |

Starmir,
If the new wheels are aftermarket, they may not be suitable for TPMS sensors. IF OE then likely new sensors will work fine. BP

Ok, thanks for that info Bee Pee... the rims are AEZ Yacht, hopefully since it is a known brand they can accomodate.
Without these rim details, my local BMW garage just sent me a 490 CHF quote for 4 sensors (74 each..) and installation, so I guess I will live with the lights on for now. |

Ok I gave in... I am getting them fitted this week for 188 euro all inclusive (over the border in germany..) they looked at the car and tyres already and have ordered the parts
Otherwise every time I drive the car I have to press a cancel button to acknowledge the missing TPMS, and then a light blinks for a while before settling down to just being on |

To close the thread...
On Friday I got the TMPS fitted to my winter rims. It cost more that what I thought as the fitting was extra (still much cheaper than doing it at BMW) But it works again, so my number 1 button is again showing me the tyre pressure live, which is awesome I guess though depending on how much a change of tyres cost you twice a year, it is more expensive to buy new rims and TPMS (atlhough they look cool ) |

In my experience
In my experience, for a 3 year period, its no more costly to buy extra winter wheels, change wheels twice per year, then sell the winter wheels at the end of the 3 years.

I agree. Wheels keep their value rather well, so the running cost of extra sets of wheels is close to zero. The first owner of a wheel set takes almost all the depreciation, and from there on you can buy and sell with no loss unless you damage the wheels.
