"Gutter" - Rain Drips Into Car
Hi, just wondered if anyone else has a similar issue. My Dad has got a 2013 116 Sport, and with living in Manchester, we sadly have quite a bit of rain.
Anyway, when opening the rear doors, rain will run off and drip straight onto the rear seats. Surely this shouldn't happen! Took it into BMW to investigate, they've stated that they don't know why it does it, and mereley polished the roof and door. They even stated that it was a characteristic of the vehicle, and was not a manufacturing issue. As this is clearly nonsence, can anyone else confirm whether they have a similar issue please? Any advice appreciated as well. |

I can confirm that I have the same issue on my X3, whenever we have rain and open the doors rain drips in on to the seats. I have also experienced the same issue on other brand of cars, so not just BMW. However, I do own a 3 series (E90) and it doesnt appear to happen as much and I believe it's due to the chrome (or black chrome) that runs the whole length of the car and then curves round the rear doors. Any water that runs off the roof goes in to this area and runs off down the back or front of the car. I don't know whether the 1 series has this same styling or whether its like the X3 and doesnt have the same piece of channeled chrome? |

Yeah a couple of drips would be normal. If it's dumping water though you might have an obstruction somewhere. Have you checked the drain channels for plant matter, excess BetaLink, etc?

The F20 has a drainage channel on the roof of the car, but does not have one around the doors. The doors just have a rubber seal, and that's it. So, the rain runs down the side of the car, and must pool / collect in the seal, when the door is opened, that water disperses into the car. On my E90, it has a drainage channel on the roof, but it also has another around the door, as well as the rubber seal. Photos below to show what I mean:- F20 - Nothing to disperse the water around the door E90 - Channel around the door, before the rubber seal |

I would agree it's just a bad design, but one I have got use to having experienced it with other brands. My old Ford Kuga use to drop a lot of rain water in to the boot when opened! |

Yes and no, Yes it was in responce to BMW not putting out a vehicle in that low a price range (or assuming that's what that comment was in reference to), and just to point out, if they did, it might be up to par for comfort and performance, fit and finish as a general statement. Would I like to pay less for a BMW, sure, all of us would, but at the cost of the product we are buying, nope..

It can happen to any gutter less model. My E39 5-series would do the same occasionally, so nothing new to a 1-series. Same for my F11 5-series, but it is not a regular event.
In another thread on this issue in the 5-series forum, I mentioned that it can be the way the outer seal sits on the body, allowing some water to track towards the inside. It then sits there waiting for the door to be opened. Best advice is to examine the outer seals closely, do they fit tight to the body? I suggest you clean them and keep them free of anything that contaminates, see if there is a difference. Only takes a small bit of leaf, or something like that, to allow a track for water. My e63 would drip a fair amount onto the driver's seat upon opening the door in the rain. Probably good aero design, but poorly thought out for real world cars.

Yeah my F20 dumps a fair bit onto the rear seat if the rear doors are opened after rain. It also manages to soak the inner felt on the top of the door wherever it decides to drip through.
