118D Refinement
Test drove and subsequently ordered a new 118D Sport Auto at the weekend.
Reading the motoring press and a fair few posts on forums like this since, one would think the refinement of BMW diesels was relatively poor. I currently have a Mk7 Golf Tdi DSG (renowned as one of the most refined engines/cars in it's class) but can't say I noticed the Beemer being any less refined, perhaps even less "diesely" than the VW. Now concerned my ears failed me on the test drive - if everyone is saying stick with petrol if you want refinement. What do other 118D owners think. Could the Auto (which really sold the car to me) be masking some of the noise reported. Are the latest models better soundproofed (BMW do seem to have a policy of continuous improvement on their models). Any thoughts? Last edited by huftonr; 03-29-2014 at 01:03 PM.. |

Can't say I worry too much about what my engine sounds like - most the time I'm listening to music and when I'm not it's fairly quiet in the cabin. Diesel's generally used to sound like tractors compared with today and I can't complain about BMW's diesel sound. My 116D is yet to "embarrass" me by sounding like an unrefined diesel.
As you mentioned the Golf - I drove one about a year ago (brand new) for work as my usual company car (Audi A6) was unavailable and ehh... don't understand why people love Golfs so much. Horrible thing. If you want to compare overall refinement Golf against the BMW there's no competition in my eyes.

I'm quite happy with my 120d at idle even outside the car I would class it as a comforting chug. Inside it's fine, yes under hard throttle it's a bit harsh but once up to cruising speeds the car is refined.
There is far more noise from the tyres than the engine to be honest. I do very low annual miles (2k to 4k) but no DPF issues and 43 mpg overall and I'm pretty sure that with the same usage a petrol equivalent would be lucky to return 32mpg.

unfortunately my average mileage is massively reduced in recent months so wish i had got petrol on that basis, but hey you can't predict the future you'll like the torque
