The stop/start function works on a fly wheel type arrangement in conjuction with the starter. If you have not made suficient movement it will stop, you will see a little guage that looks lika a fuel guage with off and ready on it. The neddle has to be at the ready for the S/S to work properly. if not, it will show that symbol you have and you then have to restart the engine. Just turn the A off, it is a gimmick. You can have your dealer turn it off perminently. If you read the manual it states continuous use of this function can cause premiture failure of some components.

There are lots of conditions that can disable the start/stop system temporarily, like the weather being too warm or cold, or the battery not charged enough.

It will start if it needs power for the A/C, og if you turn the steering wheel a little. I think even running the radio loud can cause the car to start the engine again.

2. Press the clutch (on manual gearbox) 3. Move the lever on auto cars (for example from D to N or DS) 4. The cabin temperature changes from the set one, when Auto AirCon is on (so it needs the A/C compressor to cool or the radiator to heat) 5. When the window mist and the Auto A/C is on (so the mist sensor is working) 6. When the battery voltage drops below a certain safety point 7. Turn the steering wheel

The problem with owning a BMW in OZ
I was told when I bought my 1er that if I did not like the Stop/Start fuction it would only takes 10 min for their BMW technicians to change the function so that it only activate when the button is pushed. Sounds great, Yes please, lets do that I said......... But wait Now they tell me that BMW Australia does not do this as free service even if BMW globally is advising this as a freebe at a service. No, No, here your friendly BMW dealer can do it, for the small fee of $395.00 (They did confirm that it does only takes 10 mins to do) They say, BMW OZ would have pay a higher tax if the car had a higher fuel consumption. What a load of crap. According to the data sheet on the 125i the S/S feature could save you 'up to' .4 of a litre per 100 litres used. (.04%) You would use more fuel than that in Sport mode driving for a few minutes Eventually I wrangled with the sales manager. She was not aware that there was a fee for it so she spoke to the sevice manager. It will be done for free as this fee was not mentioned during the costing of the car. It was implied as a free sevice If anyone is thinking of buying a F20/F21 in OZ, made sure you ask the question and have them agree to doing it for free in writing. |

The start stop function work great ! I love it. the engine start is in a blink of an eye and it even keep the engine at 1000 rpm so you can get off quickly.
I also notice that if you release the break and go down hill (in traffic jam) as long as you below ~7Km/h and you don't move the steering wheel the engine doesn't start which is great for saving fuel. |

It's fine when you have the manual transmission because then you have to make the conscious decision of activating start/stop by releasing the clutch. With the automatic it's really annoying because the engine will shut down even if you're just briefly stopping for a second. I just push the button to deactivate this feature every time I get in the car.

Not sure I see the point on an M135i, so I think I'll be turning it off when I get my car in March.

I think the concern over the "stop/start" function is a little overstated. If you get in the car, push the "start" button, then push the button above to disable "stop/start" for that trip, the problem is solved . It's just getting into the habit.

-My experience is you have to let it charge up for a bit, not sure about cold weather sorry it doesn't really get cold for us.
-As long as AC is not being used you can start/stop for a long time. -It's really an energy saving thing, so I use it big time. -I was worried about frequent start/stop will kill something in my car, but I blindly trust drones in BMW engineering to sort that out, and the car will last like 20 years like my ol' man's E30. -Yes they can fix that start/stop thing, it was pressured by the US market. But, BMW feels saving more energy is more important, so they reverted back to not doing it. (so I found somewhere on the net) Cheers |

If i know that I'm only going to be stopped for a minimal amount of time (and by minimal i mean like under 3 seconds), then i turn my steering wheel just over 90 degrees to the side (this deactivates the stop/start function). It also gives me more control of when the engine is to shut down.
Nonetheless we need a better way of controlling this function. At the moment as soon as you stop, the engine shuts off, which i don't like because many times when you stop you don't need/want the engine to shut down. For example when you slow down and stop at a red light knowing that the light will turn green VERY soon. A way of getting around this is to have a pressure point in the break pedals to act like a switch. Depress the breaks hard enough and you turn on the function for the engine to stop, otherwise if you only depress it lightly it will stay running. |

The Stop/start function failed on me once. I was stopping at a light that immediately turned green, causing me to release the brake. There was a chime and a error message telling me to start the car manually.
Now, I've started to switch the auto gear selector over to S whenever I don't want the car to stop. Works fine for me. |

Personally I find the Star/Stop function pointless in most occasions, so I disable it by clicking on the OFF button above the START button. I hate it when the engine cuts off when the car is stopped in traffic for just over 2 seconds. If I know I am going to stop for any length of time, say more than a minute, then I enable it myself or simply turn the engine off. The petrol one saves is minimal !! And....does all that start and stop of the engine eventually wear out the starter motor or some other parts?

Personally I hate this function, I turn it off immediately after engine start and I am planning to disable it. There are 3 options of disable:
1. Default on - factory setting. 2. Remember last driver setting on or off. 3. Default off. And Yes, I have read some info about premature starter wear, and what is more scary, about premature crankshaft wear - probably some mostly city bumper to bumper driver. |
