BMW F20 125 - Noisy tappets?
Hi all, Tried searching the forum for this topic but couldnt find anything. We've had our 125 auto for about a month and have just noticed that the engine seems quite noisy at idle as in, very tappety - it reminds me of a diesel engine. I only notice this sound from inside the car, listening from the outside, it seems normal, so i'm not overly worried about it, but having come from a 335, this engine does seem to be a bit noisier. Is this something that other owners have picked up?

Is it engine temperature related?

I want to emphasize what tkburn wrote: this is completely normal for the 125i, mine has the diesel-esque sound as well when stationary. Same goes for a Golf GTI, which engine is comparable.

I am 100% sure of this , see car and driver review below
"And when a 328i pulls up, a pronounced ticking from the injectors also gives away its identity. BMW tried hard to suppress the N20’s diesel-like injector noise with an acoustic cover and a thick rubber pad on top of the engine, but it remains somewhat noticeable." http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...-drive-reviews FYI the 125i and 328i engines are identical |

Common comment for the N20 in the 328i.
The 328i demo car I tried, confirmed what I'd read on the injection noise at idle. Yes, does sound a bit like a diesel. HighlandPete |
