New car run in
Hi everyone,
I am about to pick up my new 125i in a few weeks. This is the first time I bought a brand new car. Some people tell me to take it easy for the first 1,500km and change oil every 500km. I'm not sure if I have the patience to do that. Did any of you run in your car? |

You don't have to change oil every 500km in the beginning.
Just take it easy with reving it too high for the first 1500-2000km. Try to avoid "pedal to the metal" when you accelerate and I(!) recommend not reving higher than 4500 upm for the first 1500-2000km. At the same time don't drive at a constant rpm for the run in period. |

We have more than 20 000 km on our F20, and it is still not due for the first oil change. I am slightly worried about this, but my dealer is telling me to wait.
The car has seen some track weekends too, but the service counters in the iDrive have not been all that much affected by it. Seems like rear brake pad wear is what eventually will trigger the first service, somewhere around 25 000 km. |

Don't change your oil every 500km, it is not necessary with modern oils and the way engines are built now.
BMW design their engines to handle full revs from day one, however, as suggested by all, best to take it easy without revving it too high (up to 4500 rpm) for the first 1500 km. After the first few hundred kms an accidental rev up beyond this will not hurt it Try not to drive at constant rpm during the run in period. Also, engines will last longer if you let them warm up, so try not to rev up to much from cold starts. |

I can tell you from personal experince the 125i is plenty fast enough up to 4500rpm so its not that bad a wait untill you reach 2000km before you rev the nuts off it. Enjoy the car!

Personally i'd be extremely uncomfortable with not changing the oil from factory fill until the first proper service interval. On my own accord i'll get a change done at 1,500km.
As with the run in, there are two theories on this, some say drive like you stole it to seal the pistons, others follow the manual... With my previous two new cars I did an in between approach where I did a couple of WOT accelerations but generally kept it very tame... both the VW and nissan has had no oil issues. At the same time, my wife drove her car as she normally would (tame) and her car's fine as well... surely there's no big issues either way.. |

I did what the manual said, i.e. drive up to 4.500 rpm and 160km/h gor the first 2.000 kms. Also, I was a bit careful with the gas pedal and not accelrating too hard. The main issue is for all the other compnonets (not the engine) to run in, like gearbox, differential, tyres, brakes etc.
I did the first oil change at 7.500 kms. I change oil at 10k, anyway. I am at 29.000 kms now and I have done 3 oil changes.
