125i vs 328i Engine

Aren't both engines the same N20?

Why does the 125i have 218hp and the one on the 328i has 245hp? Is it just engine ecu map?

You might need a new exhaust to get the same output as the x28i.

Actually I think you can remap to get an extra 40 odd horses, but if you want to go beyond that you'd be looking at a new exhaust. To be honest though, the remap will probably set you back £1.5/2k and bye bye warranty so you need to decide where to draw the line between remapped 125i and m135i at a £4k difference on base unit.

In australia the price difference between 125i and m135i is about $20000 USD.
And you can get the JB4 tune for $350 usd. But the same tune on the 328i gives almost 300 horses, while on the 125i is 255horses

Have you had email contact with terry at BMS? Before I installed it on my 125i I emailed him several times about whether or not I would end up with the same power as a tuned 328i. As it was the first one he had supplied for a 125 it was unclear whether it would indeed produce the same amount of horses. As for the exhaust on the two cars, my understanding is that the 328s exhaust is only 1/4 inch wider only at the back. That is the only difference between the engines. Having driven a stock 328 I can tell you there is a hell of a difference between it and my tuned 125. I have also changed the back muffler for a straight through one. Not so much for performance but I found the car way too quiet

Could you do a video of the exhaust sound? and spirited driving?

Cause i think the sound is very dim, and thats what was getting me undeceive between the 125i or a coupe 135i. Same price range (second hand 135i), so i can chose between both.
Something louder with more grunt is definetly more attractive to me.

Personally I like the exhaust note as it allows me to have a lot of fun without alerting the boys in blue (police). I think that could be a big benefit to you in Sydney.

You can always wait for the M chip and fit a fully tuned 75mm system with a butterfly silencer before the back box to give you the best of both worlds.
'flick' the switch for loud.

Rumour is the M chip will be available later this year
Any high quality Exhaust shop can build the Stainless exhaust system for you.
You can expect to pay somewhere around 3K if you reuse your catalytic.

Custom built is always expensive

Look on the bright side, this could be considered cheap
A friend of mine who lives in London has just upgraded the exhaust system on his new Aston with a custom 150mm oval quad system and custom cats for only 22,000 pounds.

Wonder why we haven't heard anything definitive from tuners in regards to the exact differences between the two engine applications... surely there's a simple 'unlock' which can bring it to 328i spec? It CAN'T be that difficult... can it?

Hey mate - im very new to chipping so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

If the M-chip is available for, say, 3k - is there anything else in my stock 125i (sport) that i'd need to upgrade to cater for this extra power? For example, i'd think that i'd probably be up for bigger brakes, etc...

Or is it a simple case of handing over 3k for some extra kilowatts?

Thanks

Depends on the stage of the remap tune.
Some are just buy it and it will give you extra power instantly. Others you have stages, you will get more power if you change intake, exhaust, down pipes, intercooler.

Remaps won't be 3k
At most like Cobb being the most expensive that I know for BMW is $800-900.

There is one JB4 that will give you extra around 50 HP and 60nm of torque for $350 usd. That is without having to modify anything else.
In turbo engines if you mostly exhaust, downpipes and intake, you get a lot extra HP.
If you do all of those withe the JB4 time you can get up to 270hp from the 218hp engine. From what I reviewed.

I see. Thanks for the info...

I'll definitely keep that in mind but will keep an eye out on what BMW has to offer with the MChip...

Thanks mate.
