Does anyone think the BMW 1 F20 is going to be replaced soon?
the reason I ask this is the dealer told me BMW were going to release front wheel drive cars soon and I am guessing this relates to the BMW 1 series so I am guessing a make over is coming too?
is this true or am I just talking rubbish? |

I would have imagined that BMW will introduce FWD with the new sport tourer or whatever they call it, doubt they'll go completely cold-turkey on the 1er. |

The F20 won't be going anywhere for another 5 years at least, and I doubt there's going to be a FWD of it version in the works because the engine is mounted the wrong way for it. Any front wheeled BMW will surely be a supermini to compete with the A1 and B Class, sharing the platform of the new Mini would support this. I don't think the next gen 1er will drop RWD either tbh, it's their USP in the sector.

The F20/F21 hatch will run the usual ~7-7.5 years with a LCI after aprox. 3-3.5 years.
That means that the current 1 Series will run until ~end of 2018 / beginning of 2019. Until then the 1 Series hatch will NOT switch to FWD obviously. The next 1 Series (F46) on the other hand will run on the new UKL plattform which will be used by the grown Mini Cooper too and I guess you know what that means regardign FWD. But for now: No worries until ~2019. |

I had this exact conversation with my local dealer on Saturday (2nd Feb 13) and they told me the new 1 series has a 7 year life-cycle (as do all BMW's) and to expect a mid-life 'face-lift' in 3 years or so - all the journalism around BMW is suggesting this will be the last RWD hatch as the 'common customer' wouldn't even know the difference - shame really. Makes my upcoming F21 M sport all the more exciting
