2012 top stolen car in France
Hi,
A french car magazine (autoplus) has published this week a list of the top stolen cars in France. The table is extracted from a couple major insurance companies. It is amazing to see that the 1 serie is ranked at the...fifth place (see the joigned jpg file). This is really very scaring !!! In the top ten, one can find five models from BMW group. Best regards sl91

Well, this article is focusing on the new hightech thiefs. They have very sofisticated devices that allow them to be electronically connect to the car.

Anything with a lock (mechanic or electronic) gets unlocked...eventually.
My question is why BMW F20 is in 5th place? 1. Is it because it is very easy to unclock? 2. Is it because BMW Group is so popular with proved quality and value? 3. (1) + (2)? |

But do journalists really know the difference?
In Norway, they have been stealing a lot of X5 with this equipment, using the OBD2 port to program a new key. BMW said they had fixed the issue, but I don't know from when. |

The chart only says 'series 1' which covers both the F20 and the previous model
Is maybe just me, but does any else find it funny that the top two on the list are micro cars. It is obvoius that they are not being stolen as 'get away' vehicles Do you think a fair few of these would be stolen rentals |

To get a rental, they have a) seen your face b) probably video-taped you c) got a copy of your ID Unless I'm not aware of any tricks, rental cars don't seem to be good candidates to steal. Maybe they're even all 'wired' ? |

As far as I know the F20 isn't as easy to take via the OBD2 port. BMW have a fix for cars of model years 2007-2011 and the F20 came out late 2011 so would be model year 2012.
In the UK dealers are recoding to get around this problem on request, but the publicity that led to that decision went worldwide. For current models I'd suspect key theft is the main issue but it would be interesting to see those figures broken down into the different variants and ages to see what is actually being stolen. |

Well the numbers are really bad to have them . I think that the security administration must make a kind of policy that will take away the thieves to withhold any car. I think that the police must find the a number of cars from it and also they would arrest the thieves.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I would happily park that car and leave the keys in it knowing that no one would take it.
