1er hatch/boot lifter/opener?
Hi all
I saw a video on Youtube showing a 1er hatch opening with Die springs fitted to the gas struts. Has anyone done this on a F20/F21? I would like to fit them to my F20 to allow the boot to open that way. I am looking for a 'How to' instructions to fit the V20x25 Die springs to my F20's gas struts If anyone has an instuction sheet or anyone who has done it on theirs could provide me with some advise, I would appreciate it |

Would like this too, only wondering how much harder it'll be to *close* the boot after the mod.

It does make me wonder why you have a button on the fob to open the boot when you still have to pull the handle to open it anyway. The boot on the F30 opens fully so why couldn't they just have this as standard on the 1?

Looks simple enough, just pop off the struts and add the springs.
I'm also not sure about how much harder it would be to close the boot... So I've contacted Bearing Boys to see if they had any non-green ones and will let you know how i get on. For the sake of £5, i'm going to give it a go over xmas I can get them delivered to the parents in the UK and fit them while the family xmas rubbish is happening http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/V20x25_...Spring-31026-p |

I have actually found this useful on a couple of occasions. Imagine you have something big and heavy in the boot (insert joke about wife/mom). You get out of the car, you lock it, then you unlock the boot and put the key in your pocket. You can then pick up the stuff from the boot and just close it without having to fiddle after the key to lock it.

Maybe they don't want to upset F31 buyers. Or perhaps the F31 has some ridiculously German system to prevent the lid from hitting anything

It looks like the washer was welded where it meets the shaft and has an inserted grommet at the bottom of the spring to allow compression. Could it be a different strutt they have used? Any advice would be appreciated. Last edited by AusF20/F48; 12-03-2012 at 01:16 AM.. |

Hi,
I ordered these springs also today. I did use another website however, but these die springs are standard ISO measures so it should be exact the same. The colour is only for coding the strength of the spring so if it really bugs you, I suppose you can give them a quick spray of paint before you install them. For me it doesn't really matter, they're only small and the boot isn't open all the time so I'll just leave them in green. Hope installation goed well and will try to post some pics of it, presumably next week!

I have found a local supplier of die springs,
They have given me info a green spring with the specs below I would like to check the compression and tension on them to make sure they are similar to the ones being suggested. DIA20mm length 25mm bore 11.4mm (N) 59.8 compression 10.8mm Are these similar specs to the ones that are being suggested? |

Hi. I'll be getting my car next week and was wondering if anyone had any success with the springs yet? Must say 25m long spring seems really short. In the vide they look longer than 25mm?

Hi guys,
I just received my springs yesterday and installed them today. At first it didn't work as expected because apparently the 25mm long springs that I got are still a bit short. So if you can, buy 30mm long springs! I resolved the problem by adding 4 washers on both sides to give the springs mire tension. Now, it works great! Installation is pretty straight forward. I found that getting the plastic ball-socket-attachment off, was most difficult. The iron caps come off easily with a screwdriver(mind your eyes as I nearly poked my own out!!!). Then you turn the plastic thinngies off using 2 sets of pliers. Quite a lot of force is needed the first time. If you use mole grips it goes best to hold the iron strut part in place (use with a rag between) while using other pliers to twist the plastic thing off. Then just install -rubber washer-spring-4iron washers-rubber washer. I'll try adding some pictures if anyone is interested. If someone needs more explained, please do tell! Good luck
