No problem, I'll just add that the N20 is not much of an engine braker either. Luckily The Netherlands are completely flat, but it still takes some getting used to as I really like to use engine braking (part of the reason I don't like auto's much).

Thanks for the long post. Most of your thoughts are quite familiar.
One of the things I have had most positive feedback about (particularly from older people who are not car enthusiasts), are the lights on the doors. |

You might want to know that at this moment there are officially no tweeter housings for the f21. However, the HK ones seem to be exactly the same and you can transfer the alpine logo to them.

thanks for the long and informative post, I'm familiar with most of the things you wrote about.
Especially that the rain sensor is a bit too slow for my taste as well. One of the things I've gotten most comments on, is the color. "looks like porn" was the latest comment today. And it sure does, awesome looking color, especially in contrast to the ground covered in snow! It's kind of slippery in Stavanger these days - woke up to 5-10cm of snow this morning, so I switched it into Sport+, and boy this car like drifting! I did not try very much, just a little bit in the city streets, but yes! It was fun! Had a nice big smile on my face all the way home. Last edited by papertiger; 12-01-2012 at 05:19 PM.. |

Also noticed that "normal people" are generally much more positive about the car's looks than the people in forums like these. Quote:
For what it's worth: the tire shop could only get a 245/35R18 run-flat winter tyre from Pirelli, costing about 600E The only option in 225/40R18 was the Conti TS820P which I'm happy with. Before anyone wonders: I'm more or less forced to use RFT winter tires on the M Sport rims due to the fact that it's on a lease. Getting a second set of rims would be way more expensive, partly due to them needing to be 17" to clear the M brakes..

Quick clip of the MPP exhaust. Sorry for the (lack of) quality or show. Best I can do with the bad weather we've been having lately.
Note that my phone doesn't capture the (pretty huge amount of) low bass the exhaust adds at all, but the crackle and pop should be clear. The amount really surprised me to be honest, you don't really hear it that much inside the car.. I don't pull away at full throttle/max revs as I'm still running it in and I'm trying to avoid the tires squealing. Equally crappy pic to accompany the vid:

For info, I have also a 125i with m sport brakes. I will fit next saturday Alloy wheels (AEZ) in 17x8 (as you mentioned 17" minimum to clear the brakes) with falken 225/45R17 eurowinter hs-449. It will cost me about 1200€ + 100€ for the mobility kit at BMW... |

I have the car on a full operational lease, so I don't know the exact price. But the guy behind the counter mentioned something like 280E / piece. Ex. VAT most likely. Your deal sounds fair and I'd probably have gone for something similar had I bought the car myself.
Tires were supposed to be fitted today, but turns out I have to wait another week for mine to be fitted as they forgot to order them and now they need to come "from abroad". Got also hit by stone or something, caused the first chip in the paint and a 10cm crack in the windshield, so today wasn't a good day for the F21.. Still love the car a bit more each day

I enjoy engine braking a lot as well, and that's part of the reason for why I went with the 120d instead of the 118i. With the 120d I get the paddles behind the wheel that let me quickly shift down a few gears while in drive. Well, I don't have the car yet, so I haven't actually tried it, but it should work that way...

rikk, I guess you are starting to fall in love with it gently??
It would have been a disappointment for me reading you would still go totally for the (cheaper, FWD) Golf. Although the Golf is a ripe and polished car, the RWD 1-series will have to blast it away in almost every relevant aspect. Concerning the M135i, I guess you're right, the 125i is a magnificent balanced car, then M135i will certainly be a blast, every time again! I can only dream of your 125i experience! Have fun with it man, every time again! |

List price is around 750 Euro, but you can find the exact price on your local BMW website, somewhere in the accessories section. If you're only after the looks you can also buy the exact same endpiece, although I think that one is quite expensive for what it is..

I certainly don't want to go back to the GTI. I still miss the GTIs engine though. Apart from the sound issue it launched with much more authority from cruising speeds. I can't quite put my finger on the difference yet. Cruising on highway speeds the the part-throttle response in Sport is about the same (nice and eager, not laggy) but at WOT it just takes half a second before those Audi X-mas lights in your mirrors start disappearing. From then on it just starts pulling like a train, no complaints. Tried different gears but doesn't seem to matter much.. Maybe good response to part-throttle and a slightly laggy response to WOT is some kind of characteristic of the twinscroll technology? But apart from that I love the car! In fact I'm going to take another peek at it through the curtains right now

Our 116i has 10400 km on the odometer, and it seems to have a slightly louder exhaust note at wide open throttle than when it was new. Maybe that happens to your car as well.
When I apply throttle, the engine starts to pull immediately, but it is not powerful without turbo boost. After about one second it has built up pressure, and pulls with its full potential. I find that delay rather annoying if I try to drive fast around tight corners, or try to drive sideways on tarmac. Maybe I will adopt my driving style to suit the engine in the future. |

Almost 4 weeks and almost 3000 km down the road I'm loving the car to bits!
Most of my initial criticisms still stand but with the break-in over I don't feel guilty redlining the car anymore and above 4000 rpm things are much louder and more responsive. Still, it takes quite long to reach the redline, I think the car would be a lot more exciting with slightly shorter gearing. That said, it picks up speed quickly in any gear, even pulling away from 60 km/h in 6th isn't a problem. I also finally got winter tires (a square setup of 225/40R18 Conti TS830 Ps) fitted and this has livened up the rear end a lot. Right now I'm happy when it rains. In the wet it's easy to break traction and kicking the tail out on roundabouts and sharp corners is extremely addictive.. The car appears very predictable when doing this, I never felt this comfortable with throwing my E46 and even my E30 around. The tires are quite nice so far. When driving normally they feel and sound hardly any different the stock S001s. This is a bit deceptive, as when pushed they can definitely smear and squirm especially under braking. The first 200 km DSC kicked in at the strangest moments, but things seem to settle now, although it still interferes a lot when accelerating from 120 km/ in 4th on a dry highway. But... so far I'm really happy with them, I just hope they last until the snow starts falling
