F20 116i M Sport at a trackday
Tested the F20 on a track this weekend.
Last year I was on the same track with an E36/5 323ti Compact with Bilstein coilovers, extra camber, limited slip differential and approx. 190 hp. To my surprise, the 136 hp 116i could do similar laptimes in stock form. The top speed on the track was 169 km/h in the Compact, and I logged 172 km/h in the F20. Mind you, the Compact was a lighter car, with quite a lot more power. The F20 was very nicely balanced, and I could brake very late with it. There was almost no understeer under power on corner exits. It is also quite easy to set the car up slightly sideways during corner entry if you turn in while still braking. I ran with DSC off, and the fake limited slip differential (ABS brakes and software) was working very well. |

Does your F20 have the M sport brakes?
I'm curious on how the regular brakes perform on a circuit. |

I have the regular brakes. The stopping power is very impressive. I did not run very long stints on the track, so I don't know how much heat they can take. After my longest stints the brake pedal was slightly lower and softer than normal, but definitely less than it would have been with my E36 323ti running EBC Yellowstuff R pads. After half an hour normal driving, the pedal was back to normal.
According to the drivers behind me, the braking lights were flashing rapidly when I was braking hard. |

Thats probabaly when ABS has to work, was programmable at the E8x too (I had it). Can be very helpful f.e. on the Autobahn. If you have to do some kind of emergency braking, the guys behind you will most likely be quite suspicious and alarmed when your brake-lights start flashing.

Very interesting!
Comparatively speaking, the 118i should then show the 323ti a clean pair of heels, even though it's about 20hp short. On the braking lights aspect, I did a floored sprint to 100km/h over the weekend, and then braked very hard to turn into a side road. The hazards automatically activated, and couldn't be turned off for about 10 seconds. Was quite interesting to see. |

Yes, the hazards are enabled when you (almost) come to a complete stop with hard braking. I also had that happen to me both on a mountain road and at a hairpin turn at autoX.
My 323ti was supposed to have 170 hp (like a 118i), but the dyno test said 190, even though the engine was not upgraded in any way. That is quite common for the M52B25 engine. I have a feeling that the N13 engine in the F20 also has more power than specified. I'll find out sooner or later. |

I made some runs on a flat road and estimated power in the F20 116i today. This is not very accurate, but should give ballpark figures. Here is the result:
Quite a lot more powerful than specified by BMW. That explains the high speeds I recorded on the race track. Method of measurement: http://personal.dynator.no/rpmanalyzer.html |

Today I participated in the Norwegian autox championship. I have some good results from back when I competed with BMW E30s, but my driving was slightly out of shape now. I could not keep up with my competitors, even though the F20 should be quite strong on paper in its class.
The problem is hairpin turns. Due to turbo lag, the car takes forever to get going again. To get around quickly, you need to use left foot braking while building up turbo pressure with the right foot. I don't master this skill (yet). |
