F-20 xDrive
I think xDrive means pretty good news for many of us who live in places with cold/special climates, and have been waiting for the all wheel system traction in the 1-series for quite a long time.
Just want to create a post to gather all info related to this extra, that as far as I'm concerned, will be abailable by the end of this year (October-November), wright? [Does this means that we'll soon be allowed to order the xdrive option and receive it on october, or that we have to wait until then to have the option to order it?] For the moment it'll only be an extra for the M135i and the 120d (we don't know if it's going to expand to the other engines). Considering some information found on this forum, the "famous" auto-box won't be an option for the 120xd (damn...), but for M135 yes. Information related to extra: price, weight, consumption is not official yet (or is it?). Thanks everyone 4 your help! PD: Just for curiosity, models won't have the X in the model name like they had till now when they had the xdrive. It seems that they are gona be called 120d xDrive instead of 120xd (picture from the BMW site) Last edited by Carto4; 08-26-2012 at 06:08 AM.. |

I live in Norway, and like spending weekend driving on tracks made on frozen lakes, but I prefer RWD. With good tires, traction is usually not a problem.

Ovekvam do you have spiky or non-spiky tires for your F20? What brand? I have to buy some winter tyres for my F20 as the winter approaches, but dont know what to get. Any advice?
Would love x-drive, but due to the extra cost and the lack of availability when i bought mine in May i opted for RWD instead. |

I haven't bought winter tires yet, since I bought the F20 this summer. I am planning to buy studless Michelin X-Ice 3. That the the new model from Michelin this season. I ran X-Ice 2 previous winter, and was happy with them. Among the premium winter tires made for Nordic climate, the Michelins are the ones that work best on bare roads. Some of the other types are too soft for the BMW handling and DSC/DTC.

If only I knew that michelin x-ice doesn't have the issue as ovekvam says I would have went for those.... I still haven't got over the huge dissapointment about this epic fail from bmw bmw did extensive winter-testing and were happy about how the DSC/DTC worked on snow and ice, but nobody from the team thought it would be a good idea to check wether it works on bare/dry roads?! I don't know anything about the process of setting up a DSC/DTC system but I imagine this issues could be cured with just a minor adjustment/calibration so that the system allow for a tiny, tiny, tiny bit of "wheelspin" (just enough to let the rubber flex without it beeing recognized as a wheelspin/lost grip when it's not the case). bmw trying to have us northern winter-climate-drivers killed?! that's not very nice of them ;p |

Seems like BMW set the DSC/DTC up for the continental type of winter tires (stable high speed Autobahn) instead of our Nordic (soft and grippy) type. They could have included an option in the iDrive for winter tire type to fix this. It is only software.

Heard pretty good things about some tires: Continental Winter Contact, anybody tried? Thanks slime.snake for the link. As I can see here, the info provided: 120d vs 120xd Consumption: + 0,2l/100km Weight: +80kg Max Speed: same. Thanks everyone. |

I had a set of Winter Contact, and for Norwegian conditions they were useless. They felt almost like summer tires. Continental Viking Contact 3 is a pretty good tire, but slightly too soft for the driving aids.

maybe the xdrive doesn't have the issue. Sounds like a nice upgrade if you would change the 116d for a 120d xdrive anyways |

The 3 door version has appeared in the car configurator in the BMW site, but 120d isn't in the car list of the 3 door version :S
