A/C auto question
In the 116i, I have closed the center vents and the side vents, since I don't like to get cold air blown in my face while driving. If I set the A/C in auto mode, it hardly has any cooling effect at all. I set the wanted temperature to 16 degrees, and outside it is 18 and sunny. The car has factory tinted windows, but there is no way the A/C can keep the temperature down. It get really warm inside. Probably well over 30.
Is the A/C system completely unable to blow cold air up or down in auto mode? If I set the system to manual settings, select up and down, and set a manual intensity, it gets cold inside. Is there something wrong with the car, or the user? |

In Auto if the system detects it needs to cool the interior rapidly it will direct the airflow towards the vents.
As you have closed the vents manually you will not get any airflow. If you close the vents then you will need to manually select the air direction settings. Cheers Lee |

If you are in Auto, then alter the air direction to up and down then the climate control should control the fan speed to achieve your desired temperature.

If I change the air direction to up and down, the auto function goes off. If I switch it back on, the air direction setting is removed.
I am not using Eco Pro. I drive 99 percent in Comfort mode in public traffic. |

When hot and sunny I quite often set the direction, temp and speed manually aswell as I'm not happy with the auto-setting which indeed use the center/side-vents way too much instead of using foot and windscreen vents...
driving for hours on a hot sunny day in automode usually give me a headache and an aching neck. |

Maybe only opening the rear vents is a "solution"?

One more question: There seems to be four temperature dials. One digital setting for each zone, one analog thumbwheel for the center vents, and one analog thumbwheel for the back seat. Is there some sort of mono setting to control everything from one dial, instead of always having to adjust all four?

I'm pretty sure the other two controls are fully mechanical (at least in previous models they were), so it'll be hard to sync them with anything. EDIT: it seems they've been digital for quite a few years. Although I think there are too many temp controls, I must admit I kind of like that (typical BMW) feature, especially in winter, as it allows you to set the face level vents to be a little cooler than the rest of the car. Or, do as my wife tends to do in the E46 when she drives to work in the morning: set them to ultra-toasty and use the vents as a hair dryer! (not kidding!) Note that in the middle position it should blow the same temperature as the other vents.

Can anybody confirm how the fan behaves in you car when using AUTO on the Automatic aircon? From my old E87, I remember that AUTO would adjust the fan speed, but on my F20, the car can be 30 degrees inside, with the temp set to 18, and the fan speed will not adjust automatically. I have to select the desired fan speed manually.

In our 116i, the fan speed is automatic in auto mode. You can still change what looks like the fan speed, but it is in reality the intensity of the climate control. On cold days, the fan speed will be low until the engines starts getting warm, and then it will speed up the fan to heat the interior.

Mine works as ovekam described. I have the Climate control set at 22oC with outside temp of aroun 30-33oC. The fan initially runs faster and then it slows down. If I lower the desired temp. for example to 18oC, then the fan starts running fast again. So definetely the fan speed adjusts automatically.

I'm sure it used to go up and down in my dad's E36
Maybe they changed the fan display for the new BMWs?

When the A/C is set to manual control, it displays the fan speed. When it is set to auto mode, the display indicates the intensity. The intensity is manually controlled in auto mode. When set to high intensity, the fan speeds are generally higher than when set to low intensity.
