I don't own one but many of my friends and family do. On the used market, they are quite expensive relative to other trucks. They seem to hover around the 50k mark for good used examples, but they do retain resale value like most trucks do (in Texas at least). For those that live in areas that have off road access that is when they are in their element, I don't know anybody that tows anything with them but I reckon they should pull a trailer of some size.

Principal complaint is gas mileage and fear of it being stolen or broken into. Also they can be expensive to insure but once again that is probably a Texas issue.

Most of my friends and family group are strong DIY'ers, but no one has reported any serious mechanical problems with them. They seem to be Toyota reliable unless they're quietly fixing things and not admitting it. - Good luck.

Raptor owner here.
2019 @ 33k
Purchased new. Had cam phasers replaced at 8k miles.
Love the truck but it does have some quirks. Nothing major after the phaser issue.
Front seat covers tend to become loose. New metal clips installed and haven’t had the issue since.
Has a floaty front end but that’s expected due to the nature of the trucks design. New springs will help.
Aftermarket exhaust systems all sound like garbage.

Overall as I said, I love the truck. I added a Cobb tune 4yrs ago and it’s been issue free while completely upping the fun factor!
Great cruiser for family trips.
Definitely compliments an R8 or any other sporty car. Get one!

Ford lifts the cab off for many engine tasks. Takes an experienced mechanic 1-1.5h to lift the cab.

I watch way too many YT engine repair videos and from what I've gathered, Ford just can't figure out their cam phasers, especially on the Eco Boost models. Then there's issues with turbo and coolant systems/gaskets. Once mileage creeps past 50k-70K, the repair floodgate seems to open on the EB motors.

What about something that can really tow like an F250 with the pushrod 6.8 or 7.3 V8 which are immensely easier to work on, sounds awesome (EB V6s sound terrible), and can do real truck stuff?

The Raptor has twin turbos? Huge heat. The only people I would trust with twin turbos is BMW (M Motors) and they are Gd-damn racing engines that require maintenance. The S58 is amazing but you better do every maintenance thing by the book with 4,000 miles oil changes. B58 all the way.

Toyota and Lexus are having huge issues with twin turbo V-6's. They are not the only one. I generally like Ford and Bob Lutz somewhat fixed them after he fixed BMW but that was a long time ago.

Excellent idea. Kinda like getting an OG M2 over an M2C. You're getting the version of the vehicle the automaker originally intended, the not the version they got pushed into to meet emissions and mpgs requirements. Plus it's way cheaper to buy and service/repair the 6.2.

The 6.2 is more reliable that the EB 3.5TT, way easier/cheaper to work on, and obviously sounds the part too. The 6.2 was primarily designed for the F250/350 class of trucks so it's built to haul and last. Same goes for the 6 speed auto vs 10 speed auto, much more reliable. Real world MPGs of the 6.2 are like 1-2 mpg lower than the 3.5TT.

The steel body of the 1st gen vs the aluminum body is also a plus, IMO. Way easier to fix thus should make insurance costs lower and cheaper to fix dents and such.

Get a 1st gen and set aside $3K to address any deferred maintenance. Make sure to change the trans fluid and spark plugs and coil packs (16 of them) as well.

There's always the $9K Whipple SC later on down the road if you need more power.

Regarding Raptors, suggest considering Ranger Rapor if full-size pick-up not necessary.
Been an M guy for decades and absolutely enjoy driving my Ranger Raptor...feels and performs like a 'sports car' of trucks w/o being too large for regular/everyday use [ie parking, grocery getter, etc]

I have a ZR2 and it is definitely NOT like the Ranger Raptor. It's ok torque, but way down on HP so it doesn't drive like a raptor or sports car in any way. A pedal commander helps, but it's much more specific to off-road stuff, higher speed and low speed. You gotta drive it pretty hard off-road to really get the shocks to do their thing and when they do, it's pretty damn good, but it's not the softest on pavement. It's ok for what I need though (the ultimate snow vehicle).
