Mudflaps - illustrated
I finally got around to take some pictures of the mudflaps. My opinion is that they don't disturb the lines much.

Lol yeah I was wondering why the front wheels.. Isn't it usually the powered wheel that kicks up more dirt?

No, I don't think I need the rear flaps. The studless winter front tires throw up a lot of salt and particles along the entire side of the car. Where I live, it is quite common to have front flaps, and almost noone install rear flaps.

Hi all
There is another option; If you don't want to fit flaps just use 'clear skins' or 3M car paint protection film (made from clear vinyl) 'almost invisible' Look at where the heaviest road grime sticks to your car then you know the shape you need. Best to cut them so they fit the wheel arch face, underside of the sill and just up the side of the sill as this is where stones will damage your paint. It is very hard to spot them on your paintwork once fitted, so it does not detract from the car's look and when if it gets damaged you can simply remove the film and replace with a new piece. You can buy it on Ebay or from most auto parts shops. |

Here in Norway, you would need it on the front doors up to around the door handles. I notice a big difference after installing the mud flaps. The sides of the car stay a lot cleaner now.

I was mainly referring to stone damage protection.
I am not condoning the use of mud flaps, that is a personal choice, it is just that they are ineffective. Mud flaps do not stop all the road haze from getting all over your paintwork and if you are driving around in those slushy conditions they only stop it at low speeds. I would assume that if your daily commute was in wet and slushy conditions, you would have to wash down your car daily to remove any grime and possibly salt residue from the paintwork. From my limited experience in driving around in snow and slushy conditions on our roads here in the snowy mountains region ('hills' in comparison to the Alps) was to fit clear skins 'as suggested' for stone protection and to have a Karcher HP Washer at the ready for when I got home to do a quick clean off of the road haze. I have not been to the snow recently, however, I do use a Karcher with the snow foam lance fitted to do a quick clean now. |

To revive the thread, I disagree that they don't work.
Look at this picture: Quote:
If anybody thinks that they are fugly, fine. But excuses not to fit them is not the same as proof that they don't work Anybody got a pic for the rear ones on an f20 M-sport, they were a hassle to fit on the E87/81 M-sport, but once I had them, cars without looked naked (and not very clean) |

The front mud flaps (82162211820) do fit the F20 M-Sport quite well. Some say they fit as they come, but I had to do a minor modification to get them to fit. BMW will however not help attaching the mud flaps as they "officially" do not fit. I attached mine just a few days ago. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of what I modified but I marked in red on the picture where I decreased the height of a rib by 1 mm. This was enough to make it fit well, but it's still quite a tight fit. Easiest way to figure out if you need to mod them or not would be to just hold them correctly against the wheel arch and see if they seem to fit or not. Right side of car took ~1h, left side 5 minutes, it's easy when you figure it out. The most difficult part was to push the tiny inserts of the plastic rivets when mounting them. Try not to break them, they require lots of force to mount! Hope it helps! (If not Ill try helping in Swedish) |

Remember that we live in Scandinavia. On salted winter roads, the car gets incredibly dirty, and the gravel used to provide friction on the slippery roads is sand blasting the paint behind the wheels. These mud flaps really help.

Thanks for the information, "Friend = Paw85"
Some colleagues say that they do not need to change anything when they mounted MUD FLAPS on the car, both front and back side. Maybe all about knowledge how do you fit mudguards on the car. P.S. Skrivet på svenska till Paw85: Har du monterat både fram och back stänkskydd? Verkligen stor tack för hjälpen . Har du mer bilder på bilen från annan vinkel som visa stänkskydd på din BMW , fram och back ? En gång till stor tack . |

When searching for information on-line what I found was that the rear mud flaps did not fit the M-Sport model without doing large modifications to them. If this is true or not I dont know as I have not tried the rear ones myself, but I believe the front ones are the most important to spare your car from being sand blasted during the winter here in Sweden.
Yes I do have one more picture of the car with mud flaps mounted. |

The X cars are too tall and heavy, so they don't handle as well as normal cars. I also think the AWD is significantly less fun to drive than RWD. |
