N54 or N55?
This is my first post here; forgive me ahead of time if I missed an introduction thread somewhere. I am fresh to the BMW world, previously coming from an Acura TL. I would like to thank everyone who contributes to this forum for all the great information. It has been a great asset in choosing my new vehicle.
I currently have a 2010 sapphire black 335XI sedan on order with a dark burl walnut/saddle interior, 6MT, M Sport, premium package, cold weather package, etc. My question is pertaining to what engine I will receive, the N54 or N55? My car was built January 28, 2010, and is currently awaiting transport. I have scoured this forum and others for information, but seem to get conflicting information. The track your BMW feature on BMW USA states in the standard features list that the engine is a “3.0-liter, dual overhead cam (DOHC), inline 24-valve 6-cylinder engine with aluminum engine block, TwinPower Turbo technology, piezo direct injection, and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing”. This would leave me to believe that I will be receiving the N55, but from what I’ve read in this forum is that I will still be getting the N54. Does anybody have any concrete information? Thank you. |

Production of 2010s continued until end of Jan. 2010.
Then a one-month break. Then production of 2011s start March 2010. Yours is a 2010, and thus a N54. (I know, because I missed the production allotment for 2010 by a single car, thus my order fell from Jan. to "theoretically" Feb - but there is a one-month break in Feb. to changeover to the new model year. I wanted a 2010.)

Good Morning After reading your post regarding which engine you will receive in your MY 2010 335xi, I can only tell you that I picked up my 2010 335xi, with all the same options as yours, and I was shocked to realize that I received the N55. At first, I was very dissapointed because I am someone interested in modding, but after driving the car, I felt completely different about it. I was coming from an 135i with injen intake, JB+ at 75%, and performance exhaust from BMW. It is still a very quick car, with tq arriving a little earlier, but what I Really like about the N55, unlike the N54, it does not run out of breath at 5,000 RPM and has major power up until near redline. My Only complaint is that at the moment, all I want is a performance exhaust and I of course cannot find one. Enjoy the new car and I hope that you enjoy the N55
-Bobby

i doubt its because there's less headroom in the N55 (for BMW). the power gains over stock are very modest on the IS.
i would suspect: most of the work has already been done, the is engine is already used in the Z4. plus they probably need to run down the current stock of N54 engines.

Good Morning
In response to my 2010 335i x drive, (it no longer says xi on the back of the car, it just says 335i and says x drive on the side of the car) I am as shocked as everyone else that it came with the N55. I was not told my my dealer, and everything I had read said that the N55's would start with the 2011 models. But, believe me, I have the N55. I am charging the battery of my camera so that I can take a picture of the engine bay, but It says it on my sticker that was on the car. The sticker reads: "3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve inline turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and Double-Vanos steplessly variable valve timing".

thats the N54. both are called twinpower, its a marketing term they use for if your sticker said valvetronic, then it would be an N55. and based on your pics from the other thread, you have an N54 this is what an N55 looks like: N54: what you have:

Sorry bobby but you definitely have the n54 and I find it odd that you talk about how the n55 feels different then your 135 with the n54, yet you have the same engine, lol. Placebo effect my friend! And the op will have a n54 too.
