Refurbishing/replacing an F20 key?
I have a 1 year old BMW 1 Series 18 plate. Got it three weeks ago. The main key looks like the previous owner must have kicked it down the street to get to the car each day. It is scuffed and dented all over. My previous 10 year old Ford Focus had a key in better condition!
I know replacement keys from BMW can be costly, and there is nothing actually wrong with it other than cosmetic damage. Does anyone know how easy it would be to deconstruct the key so I can get the battery and circuit board out and maybe transplant it into a new blank key? As an example, there is one like this on Ebay: Other than the fact mine has a red band around the buttons, rather than the silver on this, the key is identical. I am wondering how easy it would be to buy something like this, take it apart, bin the circuit and blank key and then put my circuit and cut key onto this? |

Your finding looks way too cheap for a complete key. But it's "master key" is uncut! Regarding operating frequency, if you ever wish to use it, be aware it can be wrong for your car: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=41_2892. Your red trim means "Sport Line".
Here is a similar DIY story: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1350048. I see empty key shells on ebay.co.uk, like the one mentioned, quite cheaper than your complete key finding. I'll skip direct links, feel free to search for "Replacement 3 Button Smart Remote FOB Key Case for BMW F20" (no quotes). And by the way, the complete key can be glued as it seems/stated! Here is a simple disassembling video: . Last edited by No one; 05-30-2019 at 09:06 AM.. Reason: Added a reassemble warning. |

Thank you very much.
That is really helpful. I have had a look on Ebay but finding that most of them are missing the little BMW emblem that is in-between the buttons. Would you just take the one off of the existing key? Will look into this more, but thanks again, really useful info. |

Here's a discussion: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...7#post19067757. Here's a video (What's the badge? There's actually another OEM part of 66122155753, for even older key.): . |
