I assumed this was obvious, but apparently not - statues are not history (except in the sense that the statues themselves are historical objects). They are symbols that the state erects to represent something. When those symbols stop representing the original meaning or when we don't want to represent said meaning any longer, it's sensible to take them down (and store in a museum if they indeed have historical value).
