In my case the mechanic simply forgot to put it back. Luckily I was standing next to him and pointed that out. I've no doubt he would have never disassembled the door again just to install the piece on his own or the foreman accepting his work would've made him to. He wasn't especially careful or using extra glue/etc attaching it either. He used a printed piece of manual to follow.

BMW calls this thing "sound insulation" and that's what I thought it was. Vapor... There's plenty on these leaks to be found. It's hard to imagine this oilcloth(?) piece can need replacement on a not too ancient car (worth replacement as a whole?) at least.
