I think Nikon thought that they were still at war with Canon.

meanwhile Canon was like, "here's what we need to fix in our camera"

So I'm thinking Nikon just said, "we need to do what Canon did to us a few years back when they gave the world the 21mp when we were only at 12 (or something like that)"
