Unless you're talking about Tacoma trucks, which aren't FWD, I don't know if any other US sold Toyota still using rear drum brakes.
But to your point, I somewhat agree. Toyota is a massively risk adverse company and is so slow to move forward. My wife's 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium is a prime example. Her 4runner, which is the same exact truck sold for the 2023 model and was introduced in 2012, is woefully outdated. It's hilarious:
- Long geared, slow-ass shifting 5 speed automatic
- Manually selectable 4WD (you pull a lever connected directly to the transfer case)
- Standard fuel injection (not direct)
- Super dim halogen headlights (Toyota finally went HID in 2021)
- No auto climate control (only included on the $50K+ Pro and Limited)
- No 3 flash turn signals
- 16-19 mpg
The wife loves it though. I'm glad we didn't a pay dollar more than $38.2K for it (listed at $44K).
