Dodge would never spend the money to get the Viper ACR a best lap time so an enthusiast group of owners helped fund the record setting run. They had poor weather and it didn't look like they were going to break any records but they finally did, however they lost a car due to a high speed tire failure.

Well if Musk is good at anything, it's stubbornly throwing money into a fire to make a point.
Even if, as suggested above, it means making a whole new version of a car just to set a pace.
Now I'm kind of excited to see what they come up with. Haha.
