I have what I think is either a 4th or 5th generation iPod that I want to just leave it in the car. Have a 2013 x3 so I believe USB should work with the white apple cable. Yet it does not. Have tried plugging in USB to car first, then connecting iPod, and other way around. Have tried soft reset on iPod. IPod displays the "Do not discconect" message but iDrive is not recognizing that it is connected. Am I missing something? Have tested USB port with iPhone so know it works.

Hate to have to waste money on a new iPod, don't want to use a USB stick, just not as convenient.
Had the same problem with my iPod nano from about 2006 and connecting it with the white cable on what we refer to as extended bluetooth on the 1 series. It's just not compatible back that far. Maybe try test with a newer iPod to be sure, that's how I worked out the problem with mine.

Worked fine on early 2012 cars. Go figure.
