I think the performance brake rotors are made of a different material. The main benefit is that they are lighter than the regular ones. Less unsprung weight has a lot of advantages, like better grip, better comfort, and quicker acceleration...
That being said, our 116i has the small basic brakes, and they are also very impressive, even for track use.
