Miele makes some nice canister vacs that double for both home and car, Bed Bath and Beyond sometimes has pretty good sakes on them.
Thing with Dyson animal is battery life at full power - so google that.

My Dyson Animal is about 3 years old and gets lots of use, on full power it will give you a solid 10 mins, on regular power its about 30 min which is enough to do my 1500 sq ft house. The thing is nice and compact and has attachments that although probably weren't intended for use in the car seem to fit the bill quite well.
