A street legal M car or Porsche GT car won't last a season's worth of actual racing, and would probably be multiple seconds a lap slower compared to these cars.

Another thing to add, I was at a recent M Track day and they had one of these cars out there. Apparently, they can adjust the tuning and power levels of the car based on a 'stick' that they insert in the driver's cabin. If I remember correctly what the BMW instructors said, there were 3 levels, up to 500hp (I think?)
The selling point pitched by the BMW team is that to own and maintain this car, it would cost a fortune as its usually run by race teams. We get to run this while learning and just pay a minimal cost.
