Another way to explain the difference is lightroom/aperture are more for global image editing while photoshop allows you to work on the pixel level. They both go hand in hand to be honest. If you are shooting an event and have 500 photos to process, you'll want to use lightroom/aperture to organize and do global adjustments. For the hero photos (the ones that you want to do extra post work because they are the best photos of the bunch), you'll want to work on them in photoshop because you have so much more control on the pixel level.
