...but when I do make the effort to drive economically 56MPG is about the best I'm averaging per tank (usually a little over 500 miles).
The manufacturers figures are produced under ideal conditions and usually on a rolling road so:-

No wind resistance
A driver with the build of a professional jockey
Minimal fuel load required
All possible weight shed from the car

etc etc.

They will never bear any resemblance to real world figures unless you reset the OBD and roll downhill with a following wind. (Actually that will get you a display of 99mpg)

My old E46 had 2 cons meters with cons2 being the lifetime consumption that wasn't reset like the cons 1 - if the current cars have the same, maybe hidden then that is what tells the true story.

My 120d seems to get around 43 average just doing short journeys on A and B roads driving normally in comfort mode and returns 56 to 58 mpg on a motorway trip from Lincolnshire to Hexham Northumberland about 180 miles run.
