BMW has been busy trademarking. Below is a list of notable BMW trademark filings within the past 2 year. Remember, just because a manufacturer registers a trademark does not mean that the model will necessarily come to fruition. But, it makes for some fun speculation and certainly paints a rough map of what potential future models we may see out of Munich.

Recent Trademark Of Note:
  • X2, X4
  • M1, M2, M7, M10
  • 2 Series
  • 2 Series Active Tourer
  • M35, M40, M55, M300, M350, M400, M500
  • M130, M135, M140, M230, M235, M240, M330, M335, M340, M430, M435, M440, M450, M550, M650, M750
  • M50d
  • Compactive, Compactive Tourer, Gran Tourer, Urbanic
  • E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8, E9
  • i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8, i9
  • Z8
  • GC, Gran Coupe, BMW Gran Coupe, 6er Gran Coupe
  • SportMode, CoolMode, Air Collar, BMW Turbotec, Drive eCharged, LifeDrive, i Pedelec
  • Corniche, Shadow, Wraith, Cloud, Dawn

It's been known that BMW has aggressive plans for a build out of the X model lineup, so seeing an X2 and X4 is no surprise, particularly since the X4 has already been confirmed.

Seeing the 2 series Active Tourer registered also comes as no surprise as it's been well speculated that the successors to the current 1 series coupe and convertible (as well as a potential new Gran Coupe variant) will take on the 2 series name. Many 2 Series and the M2 trademarks have previously been filed. What the 2 Series Active Tourer may be is fodder for the rumormill, but the name implies that it may be a crossover utility type model.

The M2 (registered one year ago) is presumably the M version of the future 2 series coupe/convertible. The M7 would obviously be a full out M model for the 7 serie. And the M10 may point to a future halo supercar for BMW M, should the BMW board ever green light the project. BMW has already trademarked the M4 name, by the way.

We also see many potential M Performance Automobile model names, with the most intriguing to us being the M300's and M400's models which would be new variants that would slot in between the standard 3 series / 4 series models and the next generation F80 M3 sedan / F82 M4 coupe (just as how the recently introduced M550d bridges the gap between the the F10 550 and the F10 M5). The M35, M40, M55 names would be M Performance Automobile models for X and Z cars.

The "Compactive, Compactive Tourer, Gran Tourer, Urbanic" names are destined for the first batch of FWD BMW models set to be introduced in the next few years. There are also some neat sounding names for possible new BMW technologies in the list.

Again, keep in mind that just because these names have been trademarked, does not mean all (or even any) of these models are guaranteed to ever hit the market; although some are much more likely than others.
